Causes and Remedies for Bad Breath in Men

April 14, 2024

Causes of Bad Breath in Men:

    1. Infectious.

Many serious diseases such as lung abscess and uremia require medical treatment and are not elaborated here. Untreated cavities, periodontitis, dental plaque, chronic sinusitis, chronic atrophic rhinitis, severe indigestion, and menstrual disorders can also cause varying degrees of bad breath.

    2. Dietary.

In general, the degree of bad breath varies with the type of food consumed and is directly proportional to the amount consumed and inversely proportional to the time of consumption. Firstly, garlic and onions, including garlic bulbs, garlic leaves, garlic sprouts, Chinese chives, scallions, and onions. Secondly, foods with strong odor, such as stinky winter melon and fermented tofu. Salted fish, salted crab, shrimp paste, and crab paste also cause a fishy odor after consumption. The smell of alcohol after heavy drinking is nauseating, but drunk people often become talkative and lose control, which is very off-putting.

    3. Habitual.

Poor oral hygiene habits, habitual constipation, failure to remove food residues from tooth gaps in a timely manner, and insufficient drinking water can also cause bad breath.

    4. Respiratory.

The most typical example is smoking. Smokers have a strong smell of smoke in their mouths, which is repulsive to others.

    5. Elderly.

It is commonly known as "old people smell" and is often caused by multiple factors.

Here are several methods to eliminate bad breath:

    1. Thoroughly brush your teeth in the morning and evening, and an electric toothbrush is more effective than a regular toothbrush.

In addition, use dental floss once a day to thoroughly remove dental plaque hidden in the gaps between teeth.

    2. Eat more vegetables and fruits.

Vegetables contain a large amount of fiber, which helps digestion and prevents constipation. The vitamins in vegetables and fruits also help gums recover and prevent gum bleeding, as well as eliminate excessive mucous secretions and waste in the oral cavity.

    3. Use breath fresheners.

Breath fresheners can quickly and effectively eliminate the odor caused by food metabolism in the oral cavity, as well as the odor caused by mild sinusitis and smoking-induced bad breath. Drinking some water first, then spraying breath freshener and closing your mouth for a few seconds can keep your breath fresh for several hours.

    4. Drink lemon water.

Drinking plain water keeps the mouth moist, and adding a slice of lemon can stimulate saliva secretion and reduce the bad breath caused by nasal congestion, dry mouth, or residual food in the oral cavity.

People with bad breath should identify the root cause and seek timely treatment through self-exploration and analysis. Some causes can be managed and dealt with on your own, which can achieve satisfactory results. Chewing gum and similar products can only temporarily mask the odor and cannot solve the root problem.
