The Impact of Alcohol on Heartbeat: Causes, Precautions, and Effects

October 16, 2023

In today's society, interpersonal communication is highly valued. Many people have had experiences with drinking alcohol and getting drunk. After consuming alcohol, people may exhibit various reactions such as flushing, red eyes, vomiting, headache, and stomachache. But what causes an accelerated heartbeat after drinking?

The reason for an accelerated heartbeat when drinking alcohol

Alcohol has a vasodilating effect, which means that after consuming a large amount of alcohol, the blood vessels in the body expand significantly. This increases the capacity of the blood vessels without changing the volume of blood. As a result, the body enters a state of low blood pressure, where the venous blood return is less than the arterial blood outflow. In order to meet the body's demand for blood, the heart has to increase its beating speed to accelerate blood flow. This leads to an accelerated heartbeat after drinking alcohol, which can even be felt by the person themselves.

Precautions for an accelerated heartbeat after drinking alcohol

It is normal to experience an accelerated heartbeat after consuming alcohol, but this phenomenon does not last long. Generally, after the alcohol concentration in the blood decreases, the heartbeat gradually returns to normal. In other words, there should not be a persistently elevated heartbeat the next day. If someone still feels that their heartbeat is too fast one or two days after drinking, they should seek prompt medical examination as it may indicate a heart problem.

The benefits of drinking alcohol

Moderate alcohol consumption, also known as healthful drinking, has many beneficial effects on the human body. For example, it can lower cholesterol, prevent diabetes, stimulate brain intelligence, prevent the formation of kidney stones, and help with weight control.

The best types of healthful alcoholic beverages to consume are yellow wine and red wine, as they cause minimal harm to the stomach and intestines, and their taste is more suitable for consumption.

The drawbacks of excessive alcohol consumption

1. Drinking alcohol directly harms the liver, leading to conditions such as alcoholic liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, decreased vision, reduced detoxification ability, weakened immune system, and increased susceptibility to infections and tumors.

2. Drinking alcohol harms the stomach, leading to poor digestion and a weakened physique, which also increases the risk of other diseases.

3. Drinking alcohol can also harm the heart, spleen, and pancreas, and may cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and pancreatitis.

4. Drinking alcohol can harm the kidneys, leading to prostatitis and affecting sexual function.

5. Drinking alcohol damages the nerves, and chronic alcoholism can lead to alcohol dependency, making a person irritable and restless.

6. Drinking alcohol harms one's appearance, as frequent drinkers may become haggard, with withered skin and premature aging.

Precautions for drinking alcohol

1. Moderate alcohol consumption is beneficial to health, while excessive drinking is harmful. Therefore, friends who enjoy drinking should always control their alcohol intake and avoid excessive consumption.

2. Alcohol has a significant stimulating effect on the stomach and intestines, especially high-concentration spirits. Therefore, it is advisable to eat something before drinking to line the stomach. The best food choices are starchy foods such as steamed buns.

3. Alcohol has a certain stimulating effect on the brain and nerves. Excessive alcohol consumption can cause hallucinations and impaired reaction time. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid driving after drinking to prevent traffic accidents.
