Can too much cod liver oil be poisonous?

Too much cod liver oil can be poisonous. The cod liver oil is a fat extracted from the liver of shark, cod, etc. It is yellow in color, has a fishy smell, and contains mainly vitamin A and vitamin D. If you take too much vitamin A and D, you will have symptoms of poisoning.

Symptoms of cod liver oil poisoning

The long-term intake of vitamin A will cause acute poisoning, manifested as loss of appetite, headache, blurred vision, impatience, hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, enlargement of liver and spleen, etc.; the intake of vitamin D in large doses will cause poisoning, manifested as low fever, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea, excessive drinking and urination, anemia, weight loss, etc., and in serious cases, convulsions will occur.

Dose of cod liver oil poisoning

Poisoning may occur in children who take 0.5-1.25 mg of vitamin D per day for several weeks or months, and poisoning may occur in children who are sensitive to vitamin D in amounts lower than this. Children who take more than 15 mg of vitamin A per day for several months may also become toxic. Therefore, the dosage of cod liver oil should be strictly controlled.

What to do if you have cod liver oil poisoning

If mild symptoms of vitamin D poisoning occur, the symptoms will improve if you stop taking vitamin A, limit calcium intake, and drink more water. Vitamin A poisoning should be discontinued immediately after the disease to reduce the intake of carotenoid foods. If severe symptoms of poisoning occur, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
