The dangers of saccharin

Saccharin is a widely used food additive to sweeten food. As a chemical product, saccharin has always been labeled as a health hazard.

What is saccharin

Phthalimide, commonly known as saccharin, is a white crystalline powder, its sodium salt is called saccharin sodium or soluble saccharin, easily soluble in water, dilute aqueous solution of sweetness is about 300 to 500 times that of sucrose. Saccharin is a food additive, a small amount of non-toxic, no nutritional value.

Hazards of saccharin

In animal experiments, when rats were fed large doses of saccharin (equivalent to the amount of saccharin in several hundred cans of cola), the chances of developing bladder cancer increased significantly. Therefore, the use of saccharin is strictly controlled in developed countries in the West, and the warning "use of this product may be harmful to health" must be stated on the label.

Is saccharin harmful to humans?

Saccharin has no significant harmful effects on humans. The principles of carcinogenesis in animal studies do not apply to humans, and the effects of normal doses of saccharin on human health are very small. In 2000, the United States did not require health warning labels for saccharin foods. Today, saccharin is also allowed to be used as a sweetener in China.

Safe intake of saccharin

The safe daily intake of saccharin for humans is 2.5 mg per kg of body weight. The addition of saccharin in food is also self-limiting, adding too much to affect the taste, so there is no need to worry too much about the dose of saccharin in food over the limit and harm the body.
