Why do grapes crack

April 29, 2023
Grapes are one of the fruits that we all like to eat, and we always have some grapes in the refrigerator at home. Sometimes the grapes we buy are full of grains, but the grapes are cracked, what is going on? Why are grapes cracked?

Cracking caused by excessive moisture

If the environment is dry, a lot of rain or a lot of artificial irrigation will lead to a dramatic increase in grape fruit expansion and pressure, which will lead to skin rupture and cracking.

Variety causes fruit cracking

There are many varieties of grapes, some of which grow relatively close together, and in the late stages of maturity due to more water absorption, fruit expansion and extrusion, closer to the grape fruit will be squeezed and cracked, appearing cracked fruit.

Insufficient pruning causes fruit splitting

Some of the grapes have a wide variety of branches and leaves. If the pruning is not thorough enough, the grape plant will have too many branches and vines, the total leaf area will be too large, the shelf surface will be depressed, and ventilation and light will be poor. If too many fruit spikes and grains are retained, the leaf area is relatively small, the water metabolism of the leaves and grains is not balanced, and the skin of the fruit is thin and brittle after maturity, which makes it prone to fruit cracking.

Too much pesticide spraying

These pesticides have the effect of reducing transpiration in the grape plant, resulting in a large amount of water flowing from the tree to the grape, which increases the pressure on the grape and cracks the fruit.

Excessive use of ripening drugs

Many fruits are picked when they are green and ripened with substances such as ethylene after being transported to their destination, and some farmers even start ripening them on the tree. If too many of these drugs are used, or sprayed too early, it can also lead to grape cracking.

Can cracked grapes be eaten?

Grapes are not suitable for consumption after cracking. Grapes are prone to cracking during the berry coloring and ripening stages. They are susceptible to mold infection, which can cause rot and attract pests such as golden turtles, bees, flies and aphids to suck the juice and spread the disease, affecting the quality of the grapes and making them unfit for consumption.
