Effects and side effects of deep-sea fish oil

April 11, 2023
When you think of fish oil, many people will associate it with cod liver oil. This article will introduce you to the effects and side effects of deep sea fish oil.

Fish oil to lower blood lipids

Fish oil is rich in DHA (commonly known as brain gold) and EPA (a kind of Omega-3 fatty acid), and these two components have the effect of lowering blood cholesterol and triglycerides, thus effectively reducing blood lipids. Triglycerides, or triglycerides, are the most abundant type of fat in the human body, and if accumulated in excess, they can lead to atherosclerosis.

Fish oil is good for the brain

DHA and EPA, the main components of fish oil, are essential fatty acids for human brain development. DHA activates brain cell function and enhances neuronal protrusions, strengthening the brain's function of transmitting information, not only participating in the growth and development of fetal brain cells, making babies innately smarter, but also improving the memory ability of teenagers.

Fish oil prevents atherosclerosis

Fish oil can prevent atherosclerosis by lowering blood lipids, and the EPA in fish oil has the effect of preventing platelet agglutination while causing small blood vessels to dilate, so it has an obvious effect of preventing atherosclerosis and can reduce the occurrence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Fish oil is anti-inflammatory and anti-disease

EPA and DHA also have anti-inflammatory activity. When the body consumes too much Omega-6-fatty acids (which are usually found in large amounts in vegetable oils) and not enough Omega-3-fatty acids, the body produces chemicals that lead to inflammatory reactions. The EPA and DHA in deep-sea fish oil can balance the excess Omega-6 fatty acids, so fish oil is often used to improve various inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, and also has some co-treatment effects on asthma, psoriasis and diabetes.

Fish oil regulates mood

EPA and DHA have a close relationship with emotional balance. When the concentration of EPA and DHA in the blood is low, the chance of mild to moderate depression will be significantly higher. A large number of clinical experiments have shown that, compared with people who do not love fish, those who love fish show more positive and optimistic performance in the face of difficulties and stress, because the EPA and DHA contained in fish also have the effect of improving mood.

The difference between deep-sea fish oil and fish oil

Deep-sea fish oil refers to fish oil extracted from deep-sea fish, while fish oil refers to fish oil extracted from fish in general. Influenced by advertisers, most people may think that deep-sea fish oil is more precious than ordinary fish oil, but in fact, there is no difference in composition and efficacy between deep-sea fish oil and ordinary fish oil, except that deep-sea fish usually live in high latitudes and cold zones, and in order to adapt to the cold and cold environment, the subcutaneous fat is thicker and more fish oil can be extracted, which has nothing to do with the preciousness of fish.

Side effects of deep-sea fish oil

Generally, it is safe for most people (including pregnant and lactating women) to take no more than 3 grams per day without any side effects of deep-sea fish oil. However, taking too high a dose of deep-sea fish oil can cause the blood to clot less easily and increase the risk of bleeding. Possible side effects of deep-sea fish oil include belching, bad breath, heartburn, nausea, loose stools, skin rashes and nosebleeds. Taking a deep-sea fish oil supplement with a meal can often reduce these side effects.
