Dietary Therapies for Night Sweats: Invigorating the Spleen and Benefiting Qi

Many people experience excessive sweating during sleep at night, but when they wake up, the sweat is gone as if nothing happened. This condition is called "night sweats" in medicine, and patients often experience symptoms such as weight loss and hot palms and soles of the feet. The root cause of "night sweats" lies in the imbalance of the body's qi and blood. On one hand, it is due to insufficient lung qi, and on the other hand, it is due to excessive fatigue. So what can be done for night sweats? This requires some adjustments in diet. Here are some dietary therapies that can help improve symptoms by invigorating the spleen and benefiting qi.


Herbal Recipe 1: Atractylodes and Pig Stomach Congee

Specific Method: Take 100g of polished rice, fry 30g of atractylodes, 10g of betel nut, 200g of pig stomach, a few slices of ginger, sesame oil, and soy sauce. Wash the pig stomach and cut it into small pieces. Put it in the pot with fried atractylodes, betel nut, and ginger. Add a suitable amount of clear water and cook. After the pig stomach is tender, remove it from the pot, remove the residue and extract the juice. Wash the polished rice and put it in the atractylodes soup, then add the pig stomach. Cook it into congee. Mix with sesame oil and soy sauce. Take it twice a day, morning and evening, for a course of 5 days.

Efficacy: Invigorates the spleen, benefits qi, dispels cold and dampness, and assists in warming the center. It treats night sweats caused by spleen deficiency.

Herbal Recipe 2: Wolfberry and Lily Soup

Specific Method: Take 30g of wolfberry, 100g of lily, 2 eggs, and 15g of rock sugar. Put the wolfberry and lily in a sand pot, add a suitable amount of water, and cook until the lily is soft. Stir in the egg mixture while stirring, and simmer to make soup. Add melted rock sugar. Take it twice a day, morning and evening.

Efficacy: Nourishes liver and kidney. It is used to treat menopausal syndrome, irregular menstruation, dizziness, tinnitus, lumbago and knee pain, restlessness and irritability, night sweats, red tongue with little coating, and thready and rapid pulse.

Herbal Recipe 3: Three Treasures Egg Yolk Congee

Specific Method: Take 15g of Chinese yam, 30g of coix seed, 15g of foxnut, 1 cooked egg yolk, and 30g of glutinous rice. First, grind Chinese yam, coix seed, and foxnut into powder. Put them in the pot with washed glutinous rice, add a suitable amount of water, boil with high heat, and then simmer with low heat to make a thin congee. Add the cooked egg yolk and mix well. Take it once a day, warm.

Efficacy: Invigorates the spleen, stimulates appetite, nourishes the heart, calms the mind, and stops sweating and diarrhea.

Herbal Recipe 4: Qi-Tonifying Pork Rib Soup

Specific Method: Take 2g of ginkgo nuts, 15g of astragalus root, 10g of fried atractylodes, and 500g of pork ribs. Stew them together to make a soup.

Efficacy: Astragalus root and fried atractylodes can tonify lung qi, while ginkgo nuts can moisten the lungs and transform phlegm. It is particularly effective for night sweats caused by lung qi deficiency.

Herbal Recipe 5: Yin-Nourishing Oyster Soup

Specific Method: Take 50g of oysters, 5g of Rehmannia glutinosa root bark, 5g of silver calyx, 3 slices of ginger, and 3 red dates. Boil them together.

Efficacy: Rehmannia glutinosa root bark and silver calyx are both cold in nature and have a sweet taste. They can cool the blood, clear deficient heat, and replenish the liver and kidneys. Oysters can clear heat, nourish yin, replenish blood, and supplement the center. Ginger and red dates are also valuable for nourishing blood and nourishing deficiency. This soup is most suitable for people with yin deficiency and heat who experience night sweats.

Note: Whether it is night sweats or spontaneous sweating, after sweating profusely, do not wipe with a cold and damp towel, and do not take a bath immediately. Otherwise, it is likely to make the situation worse and cause a cold.
