April 7, 2024

Phyllostachys heterocycla, also known as bamboo shoots, is a wild herbaceous plant derived from the wild plant Polygonum chinense. Its tender leaves can be used as medicine, with the effects of clearing heat, detoxification, and relieving itching. Here are the methods of sowing and consuming bamboo shoots!

    [Methods of consuming bamboo shoots]

    1. Bamboo Shoot Soup

Method: Take 1 handful of bamboo shoots, decoct in water, and take orally.

Effects: Dampness removal and insecticidal. It is used for treating prolapse of the anus and anal itching caused by worms.

    2. Cold Mixed Bamboo Shoots

Method: Clean the bamboo shoots and blanch them in boiling water. Rinse them several times, place them on a plate, add refined salt, monosodium glutamate, soy sauce, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Mix well and serve.

Effects: Bamboo shoots have diuretic, heat-clearing, and insecticidal effects. They are used for treating dysuria, cloudy urine, hot dysuria, stasis of vital essence, and closure of the orifices. They are also used to treat symptoms such as stagnant qi in women, damp heat in the stomach, and abnormal vaginal discharge. In folk medicine, they are used to treat diseases such as fever, roundworms, and pinworms.

    [Sowing bamboo shoot seeds]

Prepare the plots in early March, water them thoroughly, and sow the seeds when the soil temperature reaches 10℃ or above. Due to the dormancy characteristics of bamboo shoot seeds, they are mostly cultivated in open fields in spring. Sowing can be done from mid-March to late April, with the highest yield achieved by sowing in late March.

Early sowing in cold weather often leads to late frosts, making it difficult for the shoots to emerge. In this case, surface covering should be used. Late sowing results in a short harvesting period and low yield.

Generally, broadcasting is used, but row sowing can also be done, with about 1 kilogram of seeds per acre.

Water the day before sowing, mix 1 part of seeds with 3-5 parts of grass ash or fine sand, and sow evenly. Cover with fine soil about 1-1.2 cm thick after sowing. The temperature at night is 3-5℃.

During the day, the temperature is 8-10℃. The shoots will emerge after 7 days of sowing, and all shoots will emerge after 10 days, with an emergence rate of over 9%. The average emergence period is 7-10 days.
