Protecting Our Gut: The Impact of Bad Dietary Habits on Gastrointestinal Health

February 3, 2024

Our body's life activities cannot be separated from food, and three meals a day provide us with energy for our activities. However, if these foods are not eaten properly, they can also harm our physical health.

Many people do not pay attention to their dietary habits and treat delicious food as a taste enjoyment. However, while enjoying delicious food, they unintentionally damage their own "health fortress". According to statistics, due to people's poor dietary habits, the incidence of gastrointestinal diseases is increasing. The total number of gastrointestinal disease patients in China is nearly 300 million, and those with severe conditions are plagued and tormented by gastrointestinal diseases, severely affecting their quality of life and even endangering their lives. Let's take a look at which bad dietary habits can lead to gastrointestinal diseases.

1. Irregular eating habits

The main reason why the gastrointestinal tract becomes sick and does not serve us well is that we do not respect it. Many people in their daily lives, especially young people who work, often keep their gastrointestinal tract in a state of irregular hunger and satiety, binge eating, and picky eating, which means the gastrointestinal tract does not have a fixed schedule. When the stomach is empty during hunger, the gastric acid and pepsin secreted by the gastric mucosa can damage the gastric wall, leading to the occurrence of acute and chronic gastritis. Binge eating can cause excessive expansion of the gastric wall. If this continues, it can lead to acute gastritis, even acute gastric dilatation and gastric perforation. Picky eating can easily lead to malnutrition and a decrease in immune function, providing a good platform for gastrointestinal diseases.

2. Heavy taste in diet

Many people enjoy the stimulating feeling brought by their taste buds and often eat spicy foods such as chili, raw onions, and garlic, which can easily cause gastritis. Some people like to eat salty, sweet, or sour foods, or strong tea, strong coffee, alcohol, etc. These can stimulate the secretion of gastric acid, causing physical damage to the gastric mucosa and leading to gastrointestinal diseases.

3. Unhealthy diet

In supermarkets, we often see some unhealthy foods with gorgeous packaging and the label of "healthy", which confuses people's eyes. For example, some pickles, sauerkraut, cured meat, cured fish, as well as some fried foods that are high in cancer-causing substances. Some people consume too much high-fat food in their diet, which can cause constipation. Fat can also promote the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids in the liver, which can be transformed into metabolites with carcinogenic effects through the action of intestinal bacteria. Some people like to eat very cold food, which often leads to gastritis. The habit of eating hot food can cause congestion and edema of the gastric and esophageal mucosa, necrosis of epithelial cells, and can cause esophagitis and gastritis.

4. Unhygienic diet

We often see bustling "mao dan" (a type of street food) business on the streets, and many people like to eat it. Some people like to eat raw or undercooked food, and we may inadvertently eat contaminated food. Little do we know that these foods contain a large number of harmful bacteria that are eroding our health, which can often cause allergies and poisoning, damage the gastric mucosa, and lead to gastrointestinal diseases.

"A thousand-mile embankment can be destroyed by an ant's nest." We must not take our diet lightly. Only a healthy diet can protect the health of our gastrointestinal tract and safeguard our physical health.
