Dietary Solutions for Infant Indigestion: Promoting Digestion and Preventing Symptoms

January 2, 2024

Infant gastrointestinal tract is not yet fully developed, making them prone to symptoms of indigestion. Most cases of indigestion in children are caused by dietary issues. Parents can start by adjusting their baby's diet. Here are a few foods that can help improve digestion in children.

 Main Causes

The main causes are insufficient secretion of digestive enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract or dysfunction in peristalsis, resulting in disorders or disturbances in digestive function. The direct causes of indigestion are mostly due to uncontrolled eating, overeating, damaging the spleen and stomach, leading to dysfunctional digestion and absorption.

 Main Symptoms

Children with indigestion often have poor appetite, weak body, weight loss, and even recurrent diarrhea.

 Dietary Prevention

1. Cabbage: Cabbage contains a large amount of dietary fiber, which can promote gastrointestinal peristalsis, aid digestion, and prevent constipation.

2. Orange Peel: The promotion of digestion by orange peel is mainly due to the volatile oil it contains, which stimulates the digestive tract, increases gastric secretion, and promotes gastrointestinal peristalsis.

3. Yogurt: In addition to containing all the nutrients of milk, yogurt is characterized by its rich content of lactic acid, which can break down lactose in milk into lactic acid, helping babies promote digestion.

4. Unripe Papaya: Unripe papaya contains two types of enzymes, papain and chymopapain, which can break down fats into fatty acids, promoting digestion and absorption of food.

5. Orange Peel: The promotion of digestion by orange peel is mainly due to the volatile oil it contains, which stimulates the digestive tract, increases gastric secretion, and promotes gastrointestinal peristalsis.

Improving infant indigestion through dietary adjustments is a viable approach. However, this approach can only prevent and improve indigestion, not cure it. Therefore, parents must pay attention when feeding their babies to prevent indigestion.
