Regulating Health Before Pregnancy: Considerations and Precautions

December 23, 2023

Pregnancy is a natural phenomenon for women, and it is normal to have some symptoms after becoming pregnant. However, I want to remind everyone that there are several types of people who need to regulate their health before getting pregnant, as follows:

Chinese medicine reminds us of the following situations that require regulation:

1. People with untreated internal diseases:

These diseases may affect the health of the mother or the fetus during pregnancy, and even threaten their lives. Common examples include congenital heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney failure, viral hepatitis, abnormal thyroid function, anemia, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc.

It is recommended that women with these underlying diseases consult relevant specialists before preparing for pregnancy. They should not interrupt treatment easily or replace their original medications with Chinese medicine. Some patients with underlying diseases can reduce or stop using western medicine with significant side effects under the condition of stable disease through Chinese medicine treatment, which is beneficial for pregnancy, but it should be guided by experienced Chinese medicine doctors.

2. People with a family history of genetic diseases or congenital malformations:

For those with a family history of genetic diseases or congenital malformations, these conditions cannot be solved through pre-pregnancy medication. They should consult doctors or medical genetic professionals to determine the diagnosis of genetic diseases and evaluate the genetic risk. Some patients are not suitable for pregnancy, and some patients need prenatal diagnosis during pregnancy to avoid the birth of fetuses with severe genetic defects.

3. Infertility patients:

The medical definition of female infertility is: couples living together, male reproductive function is normal, and the female has been unprotected and not pregnant for more than 1 year. Many factors can cause infertility, and some of the above-mentioned internal diseases or genetic diseases themselves may cause infertility. In addition, ovarian dysfunction, reproductive system malformations or inflammation, endometrial diseases, immune factors, etc. are common causes of infertility. Some of these factors can be significantly improved through Chinese and Western medical treatment, but some may require surgery to solve.

Pre-pregnancy diet considerations:

1. Pre-pregnancy iodine supplementation:

Pre-pregnancy iodine supplementation has a more significant effect on the brain development of the next generation than iodine supplementation during pregnancy. Iodine is called an intelligence nutrient and is an essential raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormones in the human body. Thyroid hormones participate in the proliferation and differentiation of brain cells during brain development, and are indispensable decisive nutritional components.

Eating iodized salt and regularly consuming iodine-rich foods, such as seaweed, kelp, kelp, sea cucumber, clams, oysters, leeches, scallops, jellyfish, etc., can meet the body's iodine needs, thereby promoting the full development of the fetal brain and ensuring that the child's intelligence and physical development are not left behind in the competition.

2. Folic acid supplementation:

Folic acid is a vitamin B, which plays an important role in the division, growth, and synthesis of nucleic acids, amino acids, and proteins in cells. Therefore, folic acid is an indispensable nutrient during fetal growth and development.

Pay attention to consuming foods rich in folic acid before and during pregnancy, such as amaranth, spinach, lettuce, asparagus, kelp, rape, bok choy, beans, yeast, animal liver, bananas, orange juice, etc. Women before and during pregnancy can eat a banana every day because it is rich in folic acid, which can prevent the birth of deformed babies.

3. Pay attention to zinc supplementation:

Zinc is a component of more than 100 enzymes or activators in the human body, and it plays an important role in the development of the fetal brain, especially the fetal brain.

Women before and during pregnancy should consume more zinc-rich foods, such as oysters, clams, kelp, soybeans, lentils, malt, black sesame, pumpkin seeds, lean meat, etc.
