The process and results of liposuction for weight loss

September 9, 2023
Many people are in pursuit of a slim and bony body, but ordinary weight loss methods are slow and the process is painful, so many people want to lose weight quickly through liposuction. So what is the process and effect of liposuction for weight loss?

The principle of liposuction for weight loss

The use of ultrasound, high-frequency electric field and other physical means to break up the fat, and then through small incisions in the skin into the subcutaneous, negative pressure suction method to a part of the body excess fat sucked out, by reducing the number of fat cells to improve the local obesity of a plastic weight loss method.

The process of liposuction for weight loss

Many people want to know the specific liposuction process before they undergo liposuction, so let's take a look at what steps liposuction goes through.

Determining the liposuction area and the amount of liposuction

Before the surgery, the doctor needs to determine the specific liposuction area and the maximum amount of liposuction that can be done according to the height and weight of the obese person and the characteristics of the obese area. In order to avoid too much liposuction affecting health or too little liposuction, the weight loss effect is not obvious.

Marking liposuction areas and incision sites

After determining the liposuction site, multiple liposuction points are designed and marked, and then the patient is anesthetized and the surgical instruments are sterilized in preparation for surgery. (Too much liposuction at a single point may cause unevenness of the skin, so most of the liposuction is done at multiple points)

Start of surgical liposuction

Physical means such as ultrasonic waves and high-frequency electric fields are used to break up the fat, and according to the marked area, an incision is made (the incision area should avoid blood vessels as much as possible), a sterilized suction tube is inserted 2 cm under the skin, and the fat is sucked out with an electric suction device.

Drainage at the end of liposuction

Drainage is actually the placement of a negative pressure suction ball in the incision area to extract some blood leakage and internal fluid in the incision.

Wrapping to end the surgery

After surgery, in order to prevent lymphatic reflux, a pressure bandage is applied so that the bleeding can be stopped compressively and a good bandage is more conducive to recovery.

Postoperative observation and recovery

After the surgery, observation should be continued. Generally, bed rest is required within 24 hours, and the surgery is considered successful if no abnormalities appear for about 7 days.

How about the effect of liposuction for weight loss

Overeating may rebound

Lipolysis reduces the amount of fat in fat cells, while liposuction reduces the number of fat cells directly, which is by definition less likely to rebound. However, this surgical weight loss method cannot fundamentally change the body's metabolism and energy conservation. If the calories ingested after the surgery are excess to the calories consumed in the long term, the fat cells will expand and therefore, liposuction weight loss is likely to rebound.

Super obese people may have skin laxity

People who are particularly obese may experience skin laxity after liposuction surgery and may have an additional abdominoplasty to cut off the excess skin. Because liposuction extracts both deep and superficial fat, the fat under the abdominal wall is extracted more evenly and 90% of people recover well from liposuction.

What are the possible adverse effects of liposuction for weight loss

Liposuction can only reduce subcutaneous fat and help reduce weight. It has no preventive or ameliorative effect on health problems caused by the accumulation of fat in the internal organs of obese people, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and may also cause adverse reactions.

Post-operative pain

Intraoperative pain may occur due to the injection of anesthetic, insufficient and uneven anesthetic range, and too low concentration of anesthetic. Under normal circumstances, the pain will turn into soreness and swelling within 24 hours after surgery, and the pain will increase when local force is applied. The pain will disappear in about a week.

Wound bleeding

Liposuction may damage capillaries and small blood vessels causing slight bleeding. With the use of tumescent solution and proper operation, bleeding is rare and will usually stop within 24 hours.

Dizziness and nausea

Long operation time, excessive nervousness of the surgeon, large liposuction area, high absorption of anesthesia, and slightly more bleeding may cause sudden standing up to cause somatic hypotension, which may lead to dizziness and nausea.

Body fever

If you still have fever and local redness, swelling, heat and pain one week after the surgery, you should consider the possibility of infection and report it to your doctor in time.

Subcutaneous bruising

Some people have subcutaneous bruising after liposuction surgery, which is usually absorbed in 1 to 2 weeks.

Hematoma, edema, and seroma

Hematoma is caused by the concentration of bleeding after vascular injury and improper postoperative bleeding compression to stop bleeding; edema is caused by the reaction after tissue injury or the compression of the articulated blood vessels by bandages, resulting in poor venous blood return; seroma is caused by poor drainage of body fluid exudation and poor compression. The hematoma and seroma will disappear with proper aspiration and compression of the dressing. Edema will slowly absorb and disappear on its own. In case of compression of blood vessels in the joint area, the pressure in that area can be reduced.

Skin laxity

In conventional liposuction surgery the patient's skin undergoes elastic retraction after liposuction and skin laxity does not occur. For those who have apron-like skin laxity before liposuction, the lax skin can be removed after liposuction surgery, which is safe and effective.
