Honeymoon Disease: Preventing and Managing Urinary Tract Infections in Newlyweds

December 10, 2023

Many newlyweds are about to enter the threshold of marriage. It is reported that some brides experience an increase in the frequency of urination, accompanied by pain, urgency, and symptoms such as chills, fever, back pain, body soreness, and lower abdominal distension during their honeymoon. Red blood cells and pus cells can be found in the urine test. This is commonly known as "honeymoon disease".

According to gynecologists, there are two important ways to develop "honeymoon disease". First, during the honeymoon period, the newlyweds are busy preparing for the wedding, with irregular eating habits and inadequate nutrition, leading to a decline in immunity. Second, both the bride and groom lack necessary knowledge and necessary hygiene measures regarding reproductive organs. In addition, frequent and hasty sexual activities cause bacteria to invade the urethra and other areas, leading to infectious diseases.

Gynecologists remind that prevention is the key to "honeymoon disease". First, attention should be paid to sexual hygiene. Both spouses should wash the external genitalia before going to bed every night, especially before sexual intercourse. The male partner must clean the genitalia thoroughly, otherwise, bacteria can be introduced into the female urethral opening, increasing the chance of urinary tract infection. Secondly, it is important to drink plenty of sugar-free water and urinate frequently. From the anatomical and physiological perspective, the female urethra is short and close to the rectum, which is very conducive to the growth and reproduction of bacteria. To avoid urinary tract infection caused by bacterial invasion, the urethra must be flushed clean through urination. Thirdly, sexual activities should be moderate. Newlyweds have a strong sexual desire, so they should exercise appropriate restraint during the "honeymoon" period. At the same time, "running a red light" should be prohibited, which means that sexual intercourse should be avoided during the woman's menstrual period. Sexual activities during this time can not only easily cause urinary tract infections but also lead to other inflammations.

Gynecologists point out that "honeymoon disease" is an acute illness that newly married women are more prone to. They feel a stinging sensation when urinating, accompanied by symptoms of frequent urination and urgency. Some may get up more than ten times a night due to urgent urination, experiencing pain every time. If these symptoms cannot be alleviated, the infection will spread rapidly, leading to symptoms such as fever, chills, incomplete urination, lower abdominal pain, back pain, hematuria, and pyuria. Doctors remind that once newlyweds suffer from "honeymoon disease", they should seek medical attention promptly to relieve the pain as early as possible.
