The Impact of Seasonal Conception on Childhood Dementia: A Meteorological Perspective

November 28, 2023

According to a survey conducted by researchers on 100 children with early-onset dementia, it was found that about two-thirds of the affected children were born between January and March. Based on this, it can be inferred that the mothers conceived between March and May of the previous year, and the initial formation of the fetal cerebral cortex occurred between June and August of the previous year. During these months in China, the temperature is usually high, and the weather is often hot and humid, which causes inconvenience to pregnant women in terms of diet and daily activities. It is also difficult for the fetus to obtain sufficient nutrition for the development of the cerebral cortex. This may be the main cause of childhood dementia.

Recent medical meteorological research has shown that meteorological changes affect thyroid function and human metabolism, and can also lead to amino acid metabolism disorders, which in turn can affect intellectual development. Some people have observed from the analysis of cases that there are more cases of schizophrenia in individuals conceived in winter and early spring. During June to August, when the infant's cerebral cortex is differentiating, it is summer, and any disruption in metabolic processes can potentially cause serious impediments to the development of the fetal brain cortex, thus sowing the seeds of misfortune. Therefore, in order to ensure the health of future generations, it is not advisable to conceive in the months of March, April, and May.
