When it comes to longevity, Rugao in Jiangsu, China, is well-known as a longevity village with 440 centenarians. In the Beidao Street of Rugao, there are two centenarians who are siblings. The younger brother, Ma Zhiyuan, just celebrated his 100th birthday on March 14, 2019, while his older sister, Ma Shifeng, is 102 years old. They can truly be called a family of longevity.

Ma Zhiyuan has good eyesight, hearing, and a clear mind. He is also very humorous. Ma Shifeng, apart from having some hearing loss, is physically strong and can take care of herself. The siblings both enjoy playing Nantong mahjong, which is a popular game in the area. They often gather together to play.

Nantong mahjong, also known as "Duzi Hu" or "You Hu," is a folk game that is played for entertainment. It is a tile-based game where certain combinations of tiles can win the game. There are different ways to win, such as "floating win," "clean win," and "flat win." This game is mainly popular among the elderly in Rugao, Haian, Rudong, and Qidong in Jiangsu Province. It is a mentally stimulating and recreational activity.

Playing mahjong not only requires skill but also promotes social interaction among family, friends, and neighbors. It helps elderly people train their brain's agility, slow down memory decline, and alleviate feelings of loneliness, ultimately contributing to their longevity.

The siblings have a positive mindset. Both families now live together, spanning five generations, and have a harmonious relationship. When it comes to the secret of their longevity, their family members say that both centenarians lead a simple life and have a very optimistic and cheerful outlook.

[Health Tip] Experts suggest that a positive mindset is one of the factors contributing to longevity. According to a survey conducted by the Chinese Geriatrics Society, a positive mindset ranks first among the longevity secrets of centenarians. Contentment, moderation, and emotional stability increase the chances of becoming a "longevity star." The ancient text "Huangdi Neijing - Suwen" reveals the relationship between a good mindset and longevity: "Be serene and empty, and true energy will follow. Guard the spirit within, and disease will be at ease. Therefore, be leisurely and have few desires, be at peace and fearless, and be diligent without fatigue." This means that maintaining a calm mindset, free from desires and worries, having few materialistic ambitions, and focusing internally can help prevent diseases and promote longevity.
