Slippery Roads Pose a Risk: Caution and Slow Movement Advised on Rainy and Snowy Days

April 2, 2024

Mr. Chang, a 72-year-old resident, went out to take out the trash on the morning of the sixth day of the Lunar New Year. Due to the slippery road in front of his house, he fell to the ground after only a few steps. He was in so much pain that he couldn't stand up. It took his children a great effort to get him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a "fracture of the intertrochanteric region of the femur". The medical staff performed an "open reduction and internal fixation" surgery on Mr. Chang, and he is currently recovering well after the surgery.

During the Spring Festival, the continuous cold and snowy weather has made the roads slippery, causing trouble for pedestrians. The hospital is receiving multiple patients with fractures and injuries every day, four times the usual number of patients. Among them, the majority are elderly people. Experts explain that caution and slow movement are necessary when traveling on rainy and snowy days. Due to decreased balance and reaction abilities, elderly people are unable to adjust their bodies in time before falling, leading to fractures in the wrist, shoulder, ankle, and lumbar spine after the fall.

Experts remind everyone to be cautious and move slowly when traveling on rainy and snowy days. It is advisable to wear non-slip shoes and take precautions to prevent slipping, avoiding wet and icy surfaces as much as possible. If a slip occurs, do not rush to get up. Assess the extent of the injury by moving around in place. If you are conscious and not experiencing severe pain, the injury may not be serious, and you can slowly stand up and move around. However, if you have difficulty moving or experience intense pain, it is likely a fracture. In such cases, seek help from bystanders or call emergency services to seek medical treatment promptly.
