Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle: Tips for Elderly Health

March 9, 2024

The health of the elderly is the greatest happiness for young people, so that they can work with peace of mind and focus on their careers. However, maintaining a healthy body is not easy. Today, I will provide some tips for the elderly to stay healthy, as follows:

The following methods can help the elderly maintain a healthy lifestyle

1. Pay attention to hydration

Especially in the dry autumn and winter seasons in the northern region, the skin becomes dry and the body lacks moisture.

It is advisable to drink a glass of warm water every morning after waking up. After a night of sleep, the body loses a lot of water;

the morning warm water can replenish the water lost due to breathing and excretion, and effectively prevent constipation.

2. Exercise moderately

There are many forms of exercise suitable for the elderly. In the morning, in parks or spacious open spaces, you often see elderly people practicing tai chi, walking, sword dancing, and playing table tennis, etc.;

as long as these exercise methods are within the physical limits of the elderly, they are worth promoting.

3. Eat properly

The elderly have poor gastrointestinal function and their teeth are constantly deteriorating, so breakfast should avoid stimulating, greasy, and hard foods;

choose easily digestible and absorbable warm foods according to their physical condition.

However, diabetes patients should pay more attention to the nutrition and proper combination of their diet to avoid worsening the condition and causing disease progression.

For lunch, you can increase nutrition by choosing foods rich in protein and trace elements, and try to stay away from high-sugar, high-fat, high-cholesterol, and high-calorie junk food.

4. Cultivate hobbies

Most working-class elderly people have already retired from their jobs. At this time, they may explore their interests and hobbies, such as raising birds, painting, playing chess, and listening to music.

For the sake of health, it is also advisable to quit smoking and drinking and exercise moderately.

5. Soak your feet before bed

In the cold autumn and winter seasons, soak your feet in warm water half an hour before going to bed to promote blood circulation and remove the fatigue of the day, and promote sleep.

It is very important for the elderly to have good sleep quality.

Healthy eating habits help the elderly live a healthy and long life

1. Eat less

The daily secretion of saliva in the elderly is only one-third of that of young people, and the secretion of gastric acid is reduced to one-fifth of that in their youth. Therefore, eating too much will cause bloating and indigestion.

2. Eat better

Protein plays an important role in maintaining the normal metabolism and enhancing the body's resistance in the elderly.

Generally, the elderly need 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight, mainly from high-quality protein sources such as fish, poultry, eggs, milk, and soybeans.

3. Eat more vegetables

Eating more vegetables is beneficial for protecting the cardiovascular system and preventing cancer. The elderly should eat no less than 250 grams of vegetables every day.

4. Keep the dishes light

The taste function of the elderly is reduced, so they often find food tasteless and tend to eat strongly flavored foods to enhance their appetite, unintentionally increasing the intake of salt.

Consuming too much salt will increase the burden on the kidneys and may reduce the barrier function of the oral mucosa, increasing the chance of cold virus survival and spread in the upper respiratory tract.

Therefore, the daily intake of salt for the elderly should be controlled at around 5 grams, and they should also consume less salty meat and other salty foods.
