Causes of Constipation

Constipation is a common and complex symptom, rather than a disease. It mainly refers to reduced frequency of bowel movements, decreased stool volume, dry and hard stool, and difficulty in defecation. It is necessary to judge whether there is constipation based on the characteristics of the stool, usual bowel habits, and the presence or absence of difficulty in defecation. If it lasts for more than 6 months, it is considered chronic constipation.

The common causes of constipation are mainly as follows:

1. Lack of dietary fiber: People who eat out, have irregular eating habits, and neglect balanced nutrition intake often have insufficient intake of coarse fiber foods. It is recommended to eat more vegetables and whole grains.

2. Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity due to prolonged sitting causes relaxation of intestinal muscles and weakened peristalsis. In addition, women naturally have weaker abdominal muscles and less force to push out stool, making them prone to constipation.

3. Excessive fatigue and mental stress: Excessive fatigue and mental stress can inhibit intestinal peristalsis and secretion of digestive juices, leading to indigestion and constipation. It is recommended to get more rest.

4. Inadequate water intake: Some people still experience constipation even after drinking enough water. This is because they do not drink water correctly, sipping water slowly, and almost all of the water is absorbed into the blood and excreted through urine. It is recommended to drink more water, especially after waking up in the morning.

5. Poor bowel habits: Due to busy work or lack of time in the morning, some people do not defecate in a timely manner even when they have the urge to do so, often holding it in. As a result, the sensory nerves of the rectum become dull, leading to habitual constipation. It is recommended to defecate at regular times.

6. Insufficient beneficial bacteria in the intestines: After taking antibiotics or other medications, the beneficial bacteria in the intestines are destroyed, leading to indigestion and constipation. It is recommended to use probiotics containing bifidobacterium, such as Golden Bifidus, to prevent and treat constipation.

There are many causes of constipation, so when patients experience discomfort during defecation, they should not rely too much on medication. Instead, they should pay attention to their diet and lifestyle to avoid the complications that may arise from long-term recurrence.
