The Impact of Staying Up Late on Liver Health: Insights from Huangdi Neijing

February 20, 2024

People who stay up late often experience sore eyes and irritability. With the faster pace of life and the increasingly vibrant nightlife, many young people often stay up all night. Over time, they find that their eyes often feel sore, and they become irritable. However, when they go to the ophthalmologist, they find that there is no problem.

This is mostly caused by liver qi and blood deficiency. "Huangdi Neijing" states that the liver governs the eyes and emotions. If the liver is not well regulated, it will manifest through external symptoms such as sore eyes, irritability, and fatigue.

Not sleeping can make the liver sick. Does "Huangdi Neijing" also mention this?

"Huangdi Neijing" states: "When lying down, blood returns to the liver." This means that when the body is lying down and resting, the blood can flow back to the liver. The period between 1-3 am is the most active time for the foot jueyin liver meridian, and it is the stage where liver blood undergoes metabolism. Therefore, it is important to rest well during this time. After the blood returns to the liver, it goes through detoxification in the liver and then transports fresh blood out, as "Huangdi Neijing" says "the liver stores blood".

If people do not rest well during this period and continue to work or engage in entertainment activities, it will affect the liver's detoxification function, and the body will not receive fresh blood. When the body has toxins, the complexion will appear dull and lack luster, which is in line with the Chinese medicine theory of "the liver governs blue". A bluish complexion indicates that the liver has started to "protest".

Therefore, it is important to get a good sleep during this period, especially for liver disease patients. Of course, if you really can't sleep, it is also advisable to choose this time to regulate your body to prevent diseases and strengthen your health.

Before regulating, we need to understand the foot jueyin liver meridian. The circulation of the foot jueyin liver meridian is described in "Ling Shu - Jing Mai": "The liver foot jueyin meridian starts at the junction of the big toe and the hair, ascends along the foot to the medial malleolus, one inch away from the medial malleolus, eight inches above the medial malleolus, intersects with the spleen meridian, ascends along the medial thigh, enters the pubic region, encircles the stomach, belongs to the liver, connects to the gallbladder, ascends through the diaphragm, spreads to the sides of the ribs, and enters the throat and head." There are a total of 14 acupuncture points in this meridian, which are mainly used to treat liver and gallbladder diseases, gynecological diseases, diseases of the anterior part of the body, and other diseases related to the pathway of this meridian.

Among the 14 acupuncture points, the most important one is Taichong (located on the dorsum of the foot, in the depression behind the first metatarsal bone). There is a saying that "when the liver is diseased, press Taichong". In fact, massaging Taichong can not only treat liver diseases but also have a preventive and health-preserving effect.

When massaging Taichong, it is important to pay attention to the method. Use the index finger to push and press up and down on Taichong, and then press with the thumb. If there is tenderness when pressing Taichong, it indicates that there is definitely a problem. If there is no tenderness, it is also advisable to massage more, because sometimes numbness and poor blood circulation can also lead to a lack of tenderness. The pressure should be moderate and slightly painful, and progress gradually.

Here, I would also like to remind everyone that it is not good to have the habit of talking before going to bed. Some couples like to leave their conversation until after they get into bed, but as a result, they become more excited and cannot fall asleep. This is because when you talk, the lung meridian is activated, and then the heart meridian is activated (the heart and lung are connected in the upper burner). This easily puts the body in an excited state, making it difficult to fall asleep. Therefore, it is best not to talk half an hour before bedtime, and especially not to talk after lying in bed.
