Tips for a Restful Sleep and Reversing Day and Night

February 19, 2024

During the day, people work and rest at night. This is the normal routine and schedule of life. However, many people prefer to stay up late at night and sleep during the day, which can be described as "reversing day and night". In fact, our body's work and rest time is synchronized with the external environment. From the rising of the sun in the morning until the setting of the sun in the evening, this period of time is the golden time for the activity of our body cells. But after sunset, the organs in our body that have been working all day need to rest. This is why we always feel more energetic and passionate during the day compared to at night. So how can we ensure a comfortable and peaceful sleep? Let me share with you some tips on sleeping and resting.

 1. Establish a proper rest schedule

Find your biological clock and create a schedule for your daily routine to improve the efficiency of your sleep and rest. Once you start implementing it and get used to it after a period of time, it will become a habit and you won't need the schedule anymore.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, the period from 11pm to 1am at night and from 11am to 1pm during the day are the times with the greatest temperature difference. During this time, our body needs proper rest.

 2. Afternoon nap

For us, taking a nap in the afternoon is necessary, especially in summer when the temperature is highest at noon. In our normal daily work, whether it's the brain or other organs, they need to rest and adjust after working for a long time in order to keep up with the overall progress. A person cannot work continuously like a machine. Just like a machine, continuous operation is not sustainable. That's why people who have regular eating and resting habits are healthier than those who often skip meals and lack sleep.

 3. Correct sleeping posture

Since most people's hearts are on the left side of their bodies, sleeping on the right side can reduce the pressure on the heart. At the same time, try to avoid placing your hands near the heart to prevent waking up due to nightmares. However, it's worth mentioning that the sleeping posture for pregnant women is the opposite. They should sleep on the left side, which is beneficial for both the pregnant woman and the baby.

 4. Sleep time

For each season, the recommended sleep schedule is: "go to bed late and wake up early" in spring and summer, "go to bed early and wake up early" in autumn, and "go to bed early and wake up late" in winter. It is best to wake up before sunrise and not too late. The normal sleep time for an average person is usually around 8 hours per day.

 5. Comfortable sleeping environment

Try not to place too many electronic devices in the bedroom. Before going to bed, turn off all the electronic devices and unplug them. It's also recommended to remove your watch, rings, earrings, etc. to create a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for your body.

Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the importance of nourishing the body through food. For us, the correct dietary habits should be: eat like an emperor in the morning, eat like a commoner at noon, and eat like a beggar in the evening. However, even if you follow this habit for nutritional supplementation, it will all be in vain if your body doesn't get proper rest. Therefore, we need not only food nourishment, but also sleep nourishment. Only by combining the two can you have a healthy and well-nourished body.
