The Impact of Diet on Cough with Excessive Phlegm: Foods to Avoid and Home Remedies

February 16, 2024

Coughing is very common in daily life. When you have a cold, occasional coughing can help expel toxins from your throat. However, if you have a persistent cough with excessive phlegm, you need to pay attention, especially to your diet.

Avoid the following foods when you have a cough with excessive phlegm:

1. Braised Pork Belly

Braised pork belly is a high-fat, high-oil food. Consuming too much braised pork belly can lead to increased internal heat in your body, which can worsen your cough and make it difficult to expel phlegm.

2. Longan

Elderly people are more prone to coughing. Eating too many longan fruits can easily aggravate internal heat, making your cough worse and causing an increase in phlegm.

3. Red Dates

Red dates are not suitable for people with a cough and excessive phlegm, for the same reason as longan fruits. Being a highly "hot" food, consuming too many red dates can intensify your cough and make it difficult for you to expel phlegm.

4. Oranges

When you have a cough with excessive phlegm, many people may think of eating oranges, as they are believed to have a cough suppressant and expectorant effect. However, in terms of actually suppressing cough and reducing phlegm, it is the orange peel that is effective, not the flesh. The flesh of oranges, on the contrary, can increase phlegm due to its "hot" nature. Additionally, oranges are acidic, which can lead to phlegm accumulation and make your cough difficult to relieve.

Home remedies for quickly relieving cough:

(1) Take one pear, wash it, cut it horizontally near the stem, remove the core, and then put 20 grains of Sichuan peppercorns and 2 pieces of rock sugar inside the pear. Close the upper part of the pear, place it in a bowl, and steam it for about half an hour. Adults can eat it all at once, while children can eat it in two servings.

Steamed Sichuan peppercorn rock sugar pear is very effective in treating cough caused by wind-cold.

(2) Take 500 grams of fresh pears, 6 grams of Fritillariae Bulbus powder, and 30 grams of white sugar.

Peel and cut the pears, remove the core, fill them with Fritillariae Bulbus powder and white sugar, close them, and place them in a bowl. Steam them until cooked. Eat them twice a day, morning and evening.

Efficacy: Clears heat, transforms phlegm, disperses nodules, and releases the exterior. It is used to treat cough or lung abscess, with symptoms such as chest pain, cough, fever, dry mouth, dry throat, yellow and foul-smelling phlegm, or bloody phlegm.
