February 15, 2024

We often encounter situations where the elderly fall asleep while watching TV, only to be startled awake when we turn off the television. Do you have elderly people around you who experience this? Let's take a look together! It is possible that the elderly are being affected by a disease.

The elderly falling asleep while watching TV could be a sign of hypertension

Recently, a study has shown that falling asleep unknowingly in front of the TV could be a sign of hypertension. This "silent killer" undoubtedly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

In Japan, a survey of 2400 adults found that among men, those suffering from hypertension tend to fall asleep much earlier than the average man.

On average, people with hypertension fall asleep 18 minutes earlier than those in a healthy state. However, people in this state often have poor sleep quality during the night. The participants in this study were between 40 and 60 years old, but the same condition was not found among women.

To keep the elderly away from disease, the following changes should be made:

1. Change lazy and uncontrollable eating habits.

2. If overweight or obese, try to lose weight appropriately.

3. Quit smoking.

4. Eat healthily, including consuming more fruits and vegetables and dairy products, reducing the intake of saturated fats, and limiting salt intake.

5. Maintain a certain amount of aerobic exercise.

 Foods that can prevent hypertension

 1. Onions

Onions contain prostaglandin A, which has a strong vasodilator effect. It can dilate blood vessels, reduce blood viscosity, and decrease blood vessel pressure. Onions also contain diallyl disulfide and sulfur-containing amino acids, which enhance fibrinolytic activity and have the functions of lowering blood lipids and preventing atherosclerosis.

 2. Corn

Corn is rich in fat, and the content of unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, is over 60%. It helps with the normal metabolism of body fat and cholesterol, reduces the deposition of cholesterol in blood vessels, and softens arterial blood vessels.

 3. Eggplant

Eggplant contains a lot of vitamin P, which can enhance the elasticity of capillaries. Therefore, it has a certain effect on the prevention and treatment of hypertension and atherosclerosis.

 4. Garlic

Garlic contains volatile spicy substances that can eliminate fat stored in blood vessels. It has a significant lipid-lowering effect and is an effective medicine for treating hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.

 5. Tomatoes

Tomatoes not only have 2-4 times higher vitamin content compared to apples and pears, but they also contain rutin, which can improve the body's oxidation ability, eliminate free radicals and other internal waste, protect blood vessel elasticity, and prevent thrombosis.
