5 Bad Habits to Avoid After a Meal

January 20, 2024

Many people have the habit of doing something after a meal. Among these habits, there are both bad habits and good habits. So what are the bad habits after a meal that we should avoid? Let's take a look together with me.

1. Eating fruits after a meal

Many people like to eat fruits after a meal, thinking that it helps to freshen their breath. In fact, this is a wrong habit. Eating fruits immediately after a meal can affect digestion. After food enters the stomach, it takes 1-2 hours to digest and slowly eliminate. Eating fruits immediately after a meal can be blocked by the previously eaten food, preventing proper digestion.

2. Drinking strong tea after a meal

Tea contains a large amount of tannic acid. Drinking strong tea after a meal can cause the undigested protein to combine with tannic acid to form precipitates, affecting protein absorption. The substances in tea can also hinder the absorption of iron, and long-term habit of drinking strong tea after a meal can easily lead to iron-deficiency anemia. In addition, drinking tea immediately after a meal can dilute the digestive juices secreted by the stomach, thereby affecting the digestion of food.

3. Brushing teeth immediately after a meal

Brushing teeth immediately after eating will erode the enamel due to the acid in the food, which will only enhance the destructive effect of acidity on teeth. The correct way is to rinse the mouth first and then brush your teeth after half an hour.

4. Drinking water after a meal

Drinking water immediately after a meal will dilute the gastric juice, causing the food in the stomach to enter the small intestine without being properly digested, weakening the digestive ability of gastric juice, and easily causing gastrointestinal diseases. If the water consumed after a meal is soda, it is even more unsuitable for the body, as the carbon dioxide produced by soda can increase the pressure in the stomach, leading to acute gastric dilation.

5. Driving after a meal

After a meal, most of the blood is concentrated in the stomach due to the need for digestion, and the brain is in a temporary state of ischemia. Driving at this time can easily lead to operational errors and accidents. Therefore, it is safer to wait for 1 hour after a meal before driving.

In addition to the above, there are many bad habits after a meal that should be avoided, such as immediately lying down after a meal, which can lead to weight gain, and taking a shower after a meal can cause indigestion. I won't list them one by one, but I recommend drinking a glass of milk or rinsing with milk after a meal, as it has a protective effect on teeth.
