Foods to Restrict for Kidney Stone Patients: A Guide for Dietary Control

December 29, 2023

For patients with kidney stones, many foods need to be consumed in limited quantities. If consumed in excess, it may worsen the condition and hinder the elimination of stones, leading to other complications. Let's take a look at the foods that kidney stone patients should restrict.

1. Control the intake of meat and animal viscera

Metabolism of meat produces uric acid. Animal viscera are high-purine foods, and their decomposition and metabolism also produce high blood uric acid, which is a component of stone formation. Therefore, the daily diet should be mainly vegetarian, with more consumption of foods rich in fiber.

2. Limit the intake of salt

A high-salt diet leads to high urinary sodium, and the increase in urinary sodium leads to high urinary calcium, promoting the formation of stones. Moreover, compared to normal individuals, stone patients are more sensitive to high urinary calcium caused by a high-salt diet. In other words, a high-salt diet is more likely to cause high urinary calcium. Therefore, excessive intake of sodium salt can increase the risk of calcium-containing stones and cystine stones. Calcium stone patients should reduce salt intake and limit daily salt intake to 2-3 grams.

3. Limit the consumption of sugars

After consuming sugar, the concentration of calcium ions, oxalate, and urine acidity increases in the urine, especially in urinary stone patients, where these three factors increase significantly. An increase in urinary calcium or oxalate promotes stone formation. An increase in urine acidity can make components such as uric acid calcium and oxalate calcium more prone to precipitation, leading to stone formation. Therefore, urinary stone patients should avoid excessive sugar consumption, and those who have had stones in the past should also consume less sugar to prevent stone formation.

4. Avoid excessive consumption of mineral water

For urinary stone patients, the mineral content in mineral water is not the more, the better. Excessive consumption of mineral water can harm the body. Blind and excessive consumption of mineral water leads to the excessive deposition of minerals and trace elements in the body, which may cause certain diseases, with kidney stones being the most common.

5. Limit the consumption of coffee

People who are prone to kidney stones should limit their caffeine intake, as it can increase the risk of kidney stones. The daily consumption of coffee should be less than 2 cups (coffee mugs), and the caffeine intake through other beverages should also be lower than the same dose.

6. Avoid excessive consumption of pickled vegetables

Pickled vegetables contain a large amount of oxalic acid and calcium. Due to their high acidity, they are not easily excreted from the intestines as calcium oxalate, but are absorbed in large quantities. They are then excreted in the urine at high concentrations, leading to the deposition and formation of kidney stones or stones in other parts of the urinary tract.

In addition to the above, there are many other foods that kidney stone patients should avoid, such as spinach and bean sprouts, which are rich in oxalic acid. Therefore, dietary control is particularly important for kidney stone patients in daily life, as a small mistake can lead to "disease from the mouth".
