Fengfu: The Key Point for Treating Mania, Epilepsy, and Neck Pain

【Location】Located in the occipital region, 1 inch directly above the posterior hairline, and below the prominence of the sternocleidomastoid muscles on both sides.

【Anatomy】Located between the occipital bone and the first cervical vertebra, within the nuchal ligament and nuchal muscles. Deeply, it includes the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane and the medullary cistern. It is also supplied by the occipital arteries, veins, and the venous plexus between the spinous processes. It is innervated by the third cervical nerve and the greater occipital nerve.

【Indications】Used for mania, epilepsy, stroke, dizziness, stiffness and pain in the neck, sore throat, and loss of voice.

【Technique】The patient should be seated upright with the head slightly inclined forward and the neck muscles relaxed. The needle is inserted slowly in the direction of the chin, to a depth of 0.5-1 inch. The needle should not be inserted upwards to avoid entering the foramen magnum and injuring the medulla oblongata.

【Combination】Combined with the point Yaoyu to treat numbness of the lower limbs; combined with the point Kunlun to treat mania and excessive talking; combined with the points Erjian and Yingxiang to treat epistaxis; combined with the points Jinjin, Yuyue, and Lianquan to treat difficulty in speaking due to tongue stiffness.

【Note】The Du meridian and the Yang Wei meridian converge at this point. Caution should be exercised when needling deeply to avoid injury to the medulla oblongata.
