The Impact of Spicy Foods on Sleep: A Surprising Discovery

November 28, 2023

A recent study conducted by a group of researchers examined a group of healthy males and found that their sleep patterns were significantly altered after consuming spicy foods. Their sleep duration was shortened, particularly in terms of reduced deep sleep, and they experienced longer periods of tossing and turning.

Experts suggest that spicy foods can indeed have an impact on sleep.

1. The stimulating substances in chili peppers, such as capsaicin, can stimulate the taste buds and subsequently activate the central nervous system in the brain and peripheral nerves throughout the body, leading to increased heart rate, elevated body temperature, and a prolonged sense of excitement.

2. Ingredients like chili peppers, Sichuan peppercorns, black pepper, and garlic can also cause significant irritation to the gastrointestinal tract and may result in a burning sensation in the stomach.

3. Spicy foods can deplete the sleep-promoting substances in the body during the digestion process. So, despite the joy and satisfaction of indulging in spicy cuisine, if you want a good night's sleep, it's best to stay away from dishes like hot pot, spicy hot pot, spicy soup, and boiled fish.

Of course, spicy foods also have many benefits. They can promote blood circulation and metabolism, alleviate stagnation of qi and blood in the body, stimulate gastrointestinal peristalsis, increase secretion of digestive fluids, improve appetite, and have effects such as dispelling wind and dispelling cold. However, it is important to consume them in moderation and maintain a balanced diet for overall health.
