[Reasons for Drooling in Sleep at Night]

  1. Mouth Breathing

When sleeping, many people unconsciously breathe through their mouths, which often accompanies drooling at night.

You may ask, how can you control whether to breathe through your nose or mouth when you are asleep?

Usually, it is because the nose cannot get enough oxygen that you open your mouth to breathe. Only by finding these reasons and undergoing corresponding treatments can the problem be solved.

Common causes include nasal congestion, chronic rhinitis, sinusitis, allergies, and deviated nasal septum.

  2. Side Effects of Certain Medications

Some medications may have the side effect of increasing saliva production. When taking these medications, you may suddenly find that you start drooling in your sleep.

Central nervous system depressant drugs, such as antidepressants, are the most likely to cause this side effect. Secondly, alcohol can also have a similar effect.

  3. Sleeping Position

When sleeping on your stomach or side, your jaw will unconsciously open, which can greatly increase the amount of drool flowing out of your mouth. When sleeping on your side, a large amount of saliva will accumulate at the corners of your mouth and flow out directly without triggering the swallowing reflex.

When sleeping on your back, due to the force of gravity, the saliva produced will accumulate at the back of your throat, triggering the swallowing reflex.

[Massage Method to Treat Drooling at Night]

To solve the annoyance caused by drooling in sleep at night, just massage the Taibai point. This acupoint combines the original acupoint and the acupoint of the spleen meridian. It can not only treat drooling in sleep at night, but also relieve body fatigue and pain. It is an important acupoint on the spleen meridian. Because the Taibai point is the original acupoint, it is responsible for various problems on the spleen meridian. Massaging the Taibai point can be painful and inconvenient, as it is difficult to reach with your hand.

  1. Gently massage the position of the Taibai point for 3-5 minutes. When massaging, do not apply too much force. Stop when you feel a slight soreness.

  1. Pay attention to the strength of the massage, and only apply slight soreness to the acupoint. Do not exert too much force. Massage for 3-5 minutes every day, and you can strengthen your spleen without taking any medication.

  3. Stand up and let your feet alternate to step on the Taibai point of the other foot. Step on it slowly and do not exert too much force to avoid injury. Usually, a 3-minute massage by stepping on it is enough.

  There is another method:

Find two yellow beans (slightly larger beans), stick them on the position of the Taibai point with adhesive tape, and kick the bean on one foot with the other foot while watching TV. Alternate kicking. Take them off before going to bed and throw them away.

If you massage the Taibai point and then do moxibustion on the Taibai points of both feet for 10 minutes, the effect will be better!

[How to Find the Position of the Taibai Point?]

  1. Standard Positioning

The Taibai point is located on the inner edge of the foot, below the first metatarsophalangeal joint (the first joint of the big toe).

  2. Acupoint Selection Method

When selecting the acupoint, you can lie on your back or sit upright with your feet flat, and the Taibai point is located on the inner edge of the foot, below the posterior edge of the first metatarsophalangeal joint.

Sit upright or lie on your back and select the acupoint at the intersection of the posterior edge of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the red and white interstice.

Quick acupoint selection: The Taibai point is located at the depression where the dorsal surface of the foot and the plantar surface of the foot meet below the posterior edge.

  3. Acupoint Anatomy

Below the Taibai point are the skin, subcutaneous tissue, toe fibrous sheath, abductor hallucis tendon, and short flexor tendon.

There are dorsal foot veins, medial plantar arteries, and branches of the medial tarsal arteries. It is distributed with branches of the tibial nerve and sural nerve. The skin is innervated by the medial cutaneous nerve of the tibial nerve.

The needle penetrates the skin, subcutaneous fascia, enters the interstice between the lateral plantar fascia and the interdigital fascia formed by it, and then enters the abductor hallucis tendon and short flexor tendon. These two muscles are innervated by the medial branch of the tibial nerve on the inner side of the sole.
