Cai Qiao Fa: The Art of Foot Treading for Disease Prevention and Treatment

February 11, 2024

The method of using the soles of the feet to tread on the affected part of the body for the prevention and treatment of diseases is called "Cai Qiao Fa". The patient lies prone with soft pads placed under the chest and the front of the thighs, lifting the abdomen off the bed surface by about 10cm. The practitioner holds on to the pre-set handrails (such as wooden bars or iron rings) to adjust their own body weight and control the force of treading. After preparing, the practitioner uses both feet to tread on the patient's waist and performs appropriate bouncing movements. During the bounce, the emphasis is on the front part of the soles pressing against the waist, with the heels lifted, and the knees flexing and extending to make the body rise and fall. This provides continuous stimulation of the waist through a bounce and compression motion, typically repeated 10-20 times. It has the effects of dredging the meridians, regulating tendons, and restoring function. It is mainly used to treat lumbar disc herniation.
