Tian refers to the sky, indicating the head. Chong means important point. This acupoint is located on both sides of the head and is an important point along the meridian, hence the name Tian Chong.

Location of Tian Chong Acupoint

Standard positioning: The Tian Chong acupoint is located on the head, 2 inches above the posterior margin of the ear root, and about 0.5 inches behind the Shuai Gu acupoint.

The Tian Chong acupoint is located on the head, directly above the posterior margin of the ear root, 2 inches into the hairline. Can be accessed in a seated or side-lying position.

The Tian Chong acupoint is located above the earlobe in the temporal region of the head, directly above the posterior margin of the ear root, 2 inches into the hairline.

Or, the acupoint can be accessed about 0.5 inches behind the Shuai Gu acupoint (as mentioned in "Fourteen Channels Manifesto," "Acupoint Selection in Meridian Tracing," "Golden Mirror of Medicinal Works").

Another theory suggests "as three fingers above the ear" ("A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion") or "as three inches above the ear" ("Essential Prescription for Emergencies").

Method of Accessing Tian Chong Acupoint

In a seated or supine position, access the acupoint above the earlobe, 2 inches into the hairline, about 0.5 inches behind the Shuai Gu acupoint.

In a seated position, side-lying position, or lateral position, access the acupoint 2 inches into the hairline above the root of the earlobe, about 0.5 inches behind the Shuai Gu acupoint.

Indications of Tian Chong Acupoint

The Tian Chong acupoint is used to treat disorders of the head and face, as well as mental conditions such as headache, tinnitus, gum swelling, stiff neck, epilepsy, palpitations, and startle reflex.

The Tian Chong acupoint is used to treat headache, gum swelling and pain, and epilepsy.

The Tian Chong acupoint is used to treat headache, tinnitus, hearing loss, gum swelling and pain, and epilepsy.

The Tian Chong acupoint is used to treat headache, epilepsy, gum swelling, and goiter.

In modern times, the Tian Chong acupoint is also commonly used to treat vascular headaches and neurogenic hearing loss.
