Effective Techniques for Neck Manipulation: Guidelines and Applications

December 12, 2023

Manipulation is a passive movement technique in which force is applied to the limbs in opposite or the same direction using both hands or with the assistance of other parts of the body (such as the knees) or a helper. Due to the large range of motion involved in the procedure and the direct impact on the joint, it is important to perform the manipulation with stability, accuracy, and skill, avoiding excessive pulling and forcing to prevent unnecessary consequences.

Neck Manipulation:

【Operational Guidelines】There are three types of neck manipulations:

⑴ Neck Rotation Manipulation

The patient sits, and the physician stands behind the patient. The patient slightly bends the head forward, and the physician places one hand on the back of the patient's head and the other hand on the opposite side of the chin. The physician then rotates the patient's head to the maximum angle on one side and simultaneously applies force to manipulate it.

⑵ Neck Rotation Positioning Manipulation

The patient sits with the head slightly bent forward. The physician places the hand on the healthy side on the head (i.e., the hand on the opposite side of the direction of rotation), and stands at the side and back of the patient. With one thumb, the physician presses against the deviated spinous process (use the right hand for left deviation and the left hand for right deviation), and the other hand supports the chin on the opposite side. The physician then rotates the head to the maximum extent (rotate the head to the left for left deviation and to the right for right deviation) and applies force simultaneously.

⑶ Supine Rotation Manipulation

This technique is performed on the basis of supine traction. While maintaining the traction force, the physician applies force with both hands to rotate the patient's head to the maximum extent for manipulation.

【Effects and Applications】Neck manipulation has the effects of smoothing the joints and correcting anatomical abnormalities. It can be used to treat cervical disc herniation, cervical joint misalignment, and other disorders.
