Throat Pinching Method: A Hands-On Approach to Promote Airway Opening and Phlegm Relief

December 11, 2023

The massage technique of using hands to pinch the throat and induce coughing or vomiting is called the throat pinching method. The practitioner uses the thumb and index finger, or the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, to apply pressure on both sides of the patient's throat, and then exerts force to pinch and manipulate the throat. This method has the effect of promoting ventilation and opening the airway. It is mainly used to treat phlegm stagnation, where there is an excessive accumulation of phlegm and saliva, leading to blocked qi and confusion. Medications and diet alone are ineffective in promoting relief.
