The Constriction Method: Promoting Flow of Qi and Blood for Healing

December 2, 2023

Applying pressure or squeezing the affected area for a moment to promote the smooth flow of qi and blood or to stop excessive qi and blood is called the "constriction method". The specific technique of the constriction method varies depending on the location. For abdominal treatment, the practitioner can use both hands to lightly press on the sides or top and bottom of the abdomen, then use the fingertips to close the abdomen and apply pressure for a moment before releasing. This process can be repeated 4-5 times. For the neck or acupoints, the practitioner can use the thumb and index finger to apply pressure for a moment. For the limbs, the practitioner can use both hands to hold the ends of the limbs and hold for a moment before releasing, then gradually tighten the grip and move along the limb. This technique helps to disperse stagnation, open blockages, reduce swelling and pain, and expel pathogenic factors. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as constipation, food stagnation, abdominal distension and pain, limb sprains and strains, as well as symptoms of excessive liver yang, dizziness, and blurred vision.
