Preventing Autumn Dryness: Simple Self-Massage Techniques for a Healthy Season

February 1, 2024

As we enter autumn, the weather gradually becomes cool and dry. On the one hand, it gives people a comfortable feeling of crisp autumn air, but on the other hand, the dry climate can also harm the body. Performing simple self-massage at home can effectively prevent the harm caused by "autumn dryness".

(1) Press and rub Chengjiang point

The Chengjiang point is located in the depression below the lower lip. Apply strong pressure with the fingertips. Saliva will be secreted in the mouth. Diabetic patients can press and rub this point about 10 times to relieve thirst. They don't have to drink water repeatedly when not dehydrated. This saliva not only prevents autumn dryness but also contains strontium glandular substance that delays aging and gives the elderly a rosy complexion.

(2) Massage the nose to open the orifices

In traditional Chinese medicine, the lungs are connected to the nose. Many people have a hypersensitive nasal mucosa to cold air, which leads to prolonged cold and flu symptoms in autumn. In early autumn, it is advisable to wash the face with cold water and massage the nose to nourish the lungs.

Operational method: 1. Rub the nose: Rub the outer sides of both thumbs against each other until a warm sensation is felt. Then, use the fingers to massage the sides of the nose and the bridge of the nose to enhance the nose's resistance to cold and to treat colds and nasal congestion.

2. Bathe the nose: Dip the nose in cold water in the morning and evening. Hold your breath and then breathe out before dipping again. Alternatively, soak a towel in cold water and apply it to the nose, continuing this practice until the cold winter arrives.

(3) Abdominal massage for bowel movements

In dry autumn weather, stool can become dry and difficult to pass. Many people resort to using medication or only having bowel movements every few days to maintain regularity. Massage is a simple and effective method to promote bowel movements. This can be done before going to bed at night or in the morning before getting up.

Operational method: Lie on your back. Rub the palms of both hands together until they are warm. Then, place the folded hands on the lower right abdomen and massage in a clockwise direction for 30 rounds.

(4) Chew and gargle

Do upper and lower palate exercises in the morning and before going to bed. Then, close your mouth, press the tongue against the palate, and gargle 100 times. This will fill the mouth with saliva, which can increase blood flow in the stomach and intestines and protect them from damage during the cool autumn season.
