Self-Massage Techniques for Menstrual Disorders: A Natural Approach to Relieving Symptoms

Menstrual disorders, also known as irregular menstruation, are common gynecological conditions. They are characterized by abnormal menstrual cycles or bleeding, as well as abdominal pain and systemic symptoms before or during menstruation. The causes can be organic lesions or functional disorders. Many systemic diseases such as blood disorders, hypertension, liver disease, endocrine disorders, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, reproductive tract infections, and tumors can cause menstrual disorders. Self-massage can be used as an adjunctive treatment for menstrual disorders and can be done before bed and upon waking up a few days before and after menstruation.

Preparation Position

Lie flat on the bed, close your eyes slightly, regulate your breathing, overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand, and gently place the palm of your right hand on the lower abdomen. Stay still for 1-3 minutes.

Massage the Lower Abdomen

Overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand and place the palm of your right hand on the lower abdomen. Apply gentle clockwise and counterclockwise circular motions for 1-3 minutes, until the skin feels warm.

Benefits: Tonifies Qi, strengthens Yang, promotes the circulation between the heart and kidneys.

Massage around the Navel

Overlap your left palm on the back of your right hand and place the palm of your right hand below the navel. Apply gentle clockwise circular motions around the navel for 1-3 minutes, until the abdomen feels warm.

Benefits: Warms the meridians, dispels cold, regulates Qi and blood.

Rub and Press Guanyuan Acupoint

Make a half fist with your right hand, extend your thumb, and place the thumb pad on the Guanyuan acupoint. Rub and press with moderate pressure for 0.5-1 minute.

Benefits: Nourishes the liver and kidneys, regulates menstruation, and relieves pain.

Rub and Rub the Waist and Sacrum

Place both hands on the sides of the waist and sacrum and rub and rub with downward pressure for 0.5-1 minute, until the waist feels warm.

Press and Rub Shenshu Acupoint

Palm Rub Xuehai Acupoint

Place the palms of both hands on the Xuehai acupoint on the same side, and press and rub with moderate pressure for 0.5-1 minute. Alternate between the lower limbs.

Benefits: Activates blood circulation, resolves stasis, promotes meridian flow, and relieves pain.

Massage should be stopped during menstruation. Pay attention to menstrual hygiene and avoid sexual activity, sitting baths, swimming, etc. Ensure adequate sleep and maintain a positive mood.
