Scrotal Diseases in Men: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

January 18, 2024

Hot weather is also a high incidence period for male scrotal diseases. Here are several common scrotal diseases in men. Male friends can self-diagnose and seek medical advice from dermatology when necessary.

Scrotal dermatitis: It is mainly caused by sweat and dirt stimulation, resulting in inflammation. The lesions are mostly limited to the scrotum, sometimes extending to the perineum and perianal skin, but rarely affecting the penis. Symptoms include redness, swelling, papules, blisters, erosion, exudation, and scabbing. If left untreated for a long time, it can become chronic, with rough skin, significant wrinkling, pigmentation, and unbearable itching. Scratching repeatedly can cause further damage to the skin of the scrotum, leading to a vicious cycle. In this case, hydrocortisone cream can be applied topically to the affected area twice a day.

Neurodermatitis of the scrotum: It is often caused by long-term mental stress such as worries and anger, as well as insomnia, leading to severe itching of the scrotal skin. Due to frequent scratching, the skin is constantly irritated, and typical damage gradually appears. Initially, the damage is in the form of flat, round, or polygonal papules with a tendency to cluster. Over time, the papules merge, the lesion enlarges, the color darkens, the skin thickens, and the skin furrows deepen, which can lead to lichenification. This condition can be treated with mometasone furoate cream, applying an appropriate amount to the affected area once a day.

Fixed drug eruption of the scrotum: Some men may develop circular edematous erythema or purplish-red erythema on the scrotal skin a few hours after taking sulfonamides, aspirin, rapid relief cold capsules, metronidazole, etc. The boundaries are clear, accompanied by a burning sensation. This type of drug eruption is often self-limiting and quickly disappears after stopping the medication. In mild cases, the erythema gradually fades within 1-10 days after discontinuation of the above-mentioned drugs. Patients should remember to avoid taking these drugs in the future. Otherwise, if taken again, the original site may have a recurrence of drug eruption, and the symptoms will be more severe each time.
