Reducing Prostate Problems: The Correct Way to Urinate for Men

December 8, 2023

For men, as they age, they become increasingly concerned about prostate problems. Research shows that the correct way to urinate can help reduce the risk of prostatitis.

Firstly, men should always urinate standing up, as this is determined by their physiological structure. The male urethra has an S-shape, and when standing, the urine can flow more naturally due to the influence of gravity. However, when squatting or sitting to urinate, the urethra becomes a hook shape and can be compressed, causing congestion in the pelvic cavity. This makes it difficult for urine to be expelled from the body, and over time, it can lead to inflammation or other health issues in the bladder and urethra.

Secondly, after urinating, men should not immediately sit back down, but should stand and move around for 3-5 minutes before sitting down again. This is because after urination, the internal and external sphincter muscles of the urethra in men close, forming a closed cavity in the urethra at the prostate. If one sits down immediately, it increases abdominal pressure, which also increases the pressure in this closed cavity. This can result in residual urine reflux, providing an opportunity for bacteria in the urethra to cause chronic prostatitis. It can also exacerbate existing prostate problems, eventually worsening symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction.
