The Impact of Skipping Breakfast: Mood, Memory, and Temper Effects on Urban White-Collar Workers

December 4, 2023

Nowadays, urban white-collar workers do not have the habit of eating breakfast, which is not advocated. Firstly, this habit is not good for health, and secondly, it affects one's temper. Research has shown that men who skip breakfast are more likely to become irritable.

A study was conducted on a group of students, half of whom ate a standardized breakfast and half of whom did not. Cognitive and emotional tests were conducted on both groups. After one week, the group that had been eating breakfast stopped, and the group that had been skipping breakfast started eating breakfast and were tested again.

It was found that men who skipped breakfast experienced a decline in mood and visual spatial memory, while women did not show such significant changes.

In order to examine the impact of eating breakfast on students, Müller's research team observed 104 students aged 13 to 20. Half of the students ate a standardized breakfast, while the other half skipped breakfast. Cognitive and emotional tests were conducted on both groups. After one week, the group that had been eating breakfast stopped, and the group that had been skipping breakfast started eating breakfast and were tested again.

Whether or not students eat breakfast has little impact on their ability to maintain focus. However, male students reported that after eating breakfast, their mood and memory improved. On the other hand, when they skipped breakfast, their memory declined and their temper worsened.

Breakfast may have certain benefits for the human body, such as providing the energy and nutrients needed for the synthesis of neurotransmitters (chemical substances that transmit nerve impulses) in the brain. The protein, carbohydrates, and fats in breakfast meats also have an impact on mood.
