Traditional Chinese Medicine Approaches for Male Infertility Treatment and Prevention

Traditional Chinese Medicine Differentiation and Treatment:

(1) Kidney Essence Deficiency Type

Main symptoms: Infertility after marriage, smaller testicles, softer texture, soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, semen analysis shows no sperm or only a few, pale tongue with white coating, weak pulse.

Treatment: Tonify the kidney and replenish essence

(2) Spleen Qi Deficiency Type

Main symptoms: Infertility after marriage, thin semen, fatigue and weakness, worsened after intercourse, semen analysis shows no sperm, pale tongue with white coating, weak pulse.

Treatment: Tonify the spleen and boost qi

(3) Obstruction in the Genital Pathway Type

Main symptoms: Infertility after marriage, discomfort in the lower abdomen, nodules in the epididymis or thickened vas deferens, semen analysis shows no sperm, purplish or bruised spots on the tongue, rough pulse.

Treatment: Activate blood circulation and dissipate stasis

(4) Yin Deficiency with Excessive Heat Type

Main symptoms: Infertility after marriage, normal testicles, vegetarian diet with cottonseed oil, or suffered from mumps or exposure to X-rays, fatigue, dry mouth with desire to drink, red tongue with scanty coating, weak or rapid pulse.

Treatment: Nourish yin, generate essence, and clear heat.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Prescriptions:

1. Banlong Pill (with modifications)

Ingredients: Deer antler glue, turtle shell glue, Cistanche, Schisandra chinensis, Dioscorea opposita, Radix Codonopsis, Fritillaria thunbergii, Dodder seed, Chinese yam, Ginseng, Poria cocos, Psoralea corylifolia, Biota orientalis, black soybean, Mylabris, Haliotis diversicolor, bull testicles. Grind the above ingredients into powder, mix with honey to form pills. Each pill weighs 10 grams, take 1 pill three times a day, swallow with rice. Function: Tonify kidney and generate essence, suitable for asthenospermia (no sperm in semen).

Clinical reports show that using this prescription to treat 37 cases of azoospermia (no sperm in semen) can achieve an overall effective rate of 93%.

2. Zengjing Pill

Ingredients: Silkworm moth, deer antler glue, Epimedium, processed Aconitum carmichaeli, Dodder seed, Achyranthes bidentata, Rubus chingii, Dendrobium nobile, Chinese chives, Cistanche, Cinnamon, Morinda officinalis, seal penis, sea horse. Boil the deer antler glue powder in cold water until boiling, add 100-200ml of yellow wine, then add silkworm moth powder, simmer and remove from heat, add the remaining powdered ingredients (Dodder seed needs to be soaked in 65-degree white wine for 12 hours), stir and make into pills, each weighing 9-12 grams. Take 1 pill in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Each course of treatment lasts for 15-20 days. Function: Tonify kidney and strengthen yang, replenish essence and seeds, suitable for asthenospermia caused by kidney yang deficiency.

3. Yuyin Fengjing Decoction

Ingredients: Anemarrhena, Alisma, Rehmannia (raw and processed), Moutan cortex, Ziziphus jujuba, Prunus armeniaca, Cinnamomum cassia, Carthamus tinctorius, deer antler glue. Decoct the above ingredients in water, take 1 dose daily, divided into 2 servings. Treatment lasts for 3 months. Function: Nourish yin and replenish essence, suitable for asthenospermia.

4. Shengyu Pill

Ingredients: Panax ginseng, deer antler, deer tail glue, dogwood fruit, Lycium barbarum, Rehmannia (processed), Astragalus membranaceus, Schisandra chinensis, sea horse, Mylabris. Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with honey to form pills, take 10 grams twice daily, swallow with warm water. Function: Tonify kidney and boost qi, suitable for asthenospermia caused by deficiency of kidney qi.

Dietary Therapy:

Bitter Melon Stuffed with Meat

Ingredients: 200g bitter melon, 200g ground pork, 1 egg, salt, cooking wine, ginger, soy sauce (all to taste).

Method: Wash the bitter melon, remove the seeds, stuff it with the seasoned ground pork, cut into sections. Heat oil in a pan, add the bitter melon and cook over low heat until done. Add cooking wine and sugar, simmer for a moment. Serve with meals.

Effect: Clears heat, detoxifies, nourishes kidney and generates essence. Suitable for oligoasthenozoospermia (low sperm count and quality).

Semen Cooling Syndrome Medicinal Diet - Shengjing Decoction

Ingredients: Rehmannia (processed) 30g, Rubus chingii 15g, Lycium barbarum 15g, Dodder seed 15g, Chinese yam 30g, Ziziphus jujuba 10g, Alisma orientale 12g

Method: Boil the above ingredients in water and take orally.

Usage: Take twice daily, morning and evening.

Effect: Tonify kidney and generate essence. Suitable for abnormal semen and kidney essence deficiency.

Prevention of Azoospermia:

Dietary Prevention:

Eat eel, loach, squid, hairtail, eel, sea cucumber, cuttlefish, snails; secondary options are Chinese yam, ginkgo, frozen tofu, tofu skin. These foods are high in arginine, which is a necessary component for sperm production. In addition, zinc deficiency in the body can also reduce sexual desire and decrease sperm count. In such cases, it is recommended to consume foods high in zinc. The zinc content per 100g of the following foods is: oysters 100 mg, chicken 3 mg, eggs 3 mg, chicken liver 2.4 mg, peanuts 2.9 mg, pork 2.9 mg. When consuming these foods, be careful not to drink excessive amounts of alcohol, as it may affect zinc absorption.
