The Impact of "Junk Sleep" on Health and Well-being

November 29, 2023

Falling asleep while watching TV, listening to music, or playing computer games; forcing oneself to go to bed and wake up at certain times, which are constantly adjusted; wanting to stay in bed longer after waking up naturally; staying up at night and sleeping during the day, including napping on weekends; working late at night and immediately falling asleep after intense work, all of these are collectively referred to as "junk sleep". This can lead to the following common health problems.

Even if you pay attention, your "beer belly" can still appear. This is not only due to your usual eating habits, but it may also be caused by your "junk sleep". "Not sleeping well, feeling anxious because there is a lot of work left to be done"; staying up late to write plans, having frequent dreams at night, and constantly thinking about unfinished work. If this "insomnia" symptom persists for a period of time, you will feel physically "heavy". In fact, because of "junk sleep", your weight does increase.

Feeling depressed, often feeling tired or lacking energy, restless, irritable, and even having thoughts of "wanting to die," these are all symptoms of depression. We often hear the term "insomnia depression," and indeed, there is a natural connection between insomnia and depression. "Junk sleep" can lead to mental fatigue, low mood, and decreased work quality. Things that were already difficult to handle may become even more difficult because of lack of sleep, leading to staying up late to work overtime, forming a vicious cycle over time.

Going out to work in the morning and realizing that you forgot to bring the completed plan, rushing back home, but unable to remember what you forgot to bring; during the morning meeting at the company, the boss can clearly see that your eyes are unfocused, and you respond slowly and frequently make mistakes when answering questions; the work for the day has just been assigned by the leader, but you are at a loss, staring at the leader's departing figure, thinking, "I think the leader just said...".

Every night, your snoring keeps others from sleeping, and others think you sleep soundly. In fact, because of snoring, you also have trouble sleeping. Moreover, sometimes you wake up because of snoring, and even develop chronic pharyngitis. Additionally, waking up in the morning you may experience headaches, dry mouth, lack of energy during the day, decreased attention, and very irritable and easily angered emotions.

You may think that "junk sleep" is just a bad lifestyle habit, but if I tell you that "junk sleep" may lead to cancer, would you be shocked? Yes, the word "cancer," which makes people tremble, can very well be caused by unhealthy sleep. Good sleep is a weapon to overcome the cancer demon.

When combing your hair in the morning, you find large amounts of hair falling out, which frightens you. Seeing your beautiful hair gradually decreasing day by day, you eventually have to reluctantly cut it short. Have you ever thought that this is caused by "junk sleep"? The length of sleep time does not have an obvious relationship with hair loss, but hair loss is closely related to sleep quality.
