Normal blood pressure range

September 21, 2023
Blood pressure refers to the lateral pressure, or pressure, of blood in a blood vessel against a unit area of the vessel wall. Because blood vessels are divided into arteries, capillaries and veins, there is also arterial blood pressure, capillary pressure and venous blood pressure. The blood pressure usually referred to is the arterial blood pressure. When blood vessels are dilated, blood pressure falls; when they are constricted, blood pressure rises. So what is the normal range of blood pressure?

What is systolic blood pressure

Systolic blood pressure is when the human heart contracts, the pressure in the arteries rises, and the pressure in the arteries is highest in the middle of the heart contraction, when the pressure of blood against the inner wall of the blood vessels is called systolic pressure, also called high pressure. According to the World Health Organization, adults with a systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg or (and) a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg are diagnosed with hypertension.

What is diastolic blood pressure

Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure generated when the human heart is diastolic and the arterial vessels are elastically retracted, called diastolic pressure, also called low pressure. The normal diastolic blood pressure in adults is <90 mmHg (12 kpa), and the unit of blood pressure is kPa, 1 kPa = 7.6 mmHg.

Normal range of blood pressure

The normal range of blood pressure is not constant, it will change with age and other objective external factors, the following is the range of blood pressure for each age for your reference. The ideal blood pressure for a person is 120/80mmHg, normal blood pressure is 130/85mmHg or less, and 130-139/85-89mmHg is critical hypertension.

How to confirm the diagnosis of hypertension

At present, we commonly use the diagnostic criteria of hypertension: without taking anti-hypertensive drugs, blood pressure is measured three times at different times and the average value is taken, and a systolic blood pressure ≥ 18.7Kpa (140mmHg) and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 12.0Kpa (90mmHg) is considered hypertension.

Clinical significance of each stage of hypertension

140-159/90-99mmHg for hypertension stage I, at this time the body does not have any organic pathology, just simple hypertension; 160-179/100-109mmHg for hypertension stage II, at this time there is left ventricular hypertrophy, heart and brain Kidney damage and other organic lesions, but the function is still in the compensatory state; 180/110mmHg or more for hypertension stage III, when there is cerebral hemorrhage, heart failure, kidney failure and other lesions, has entered the decompensation period, may occur at any time life threatening.
