Gua Sha for Weight Loss
Gua sha not only helps with weight loss, but also has numerous health benefits that other weight loss methods may not achieve. It can promote blood circulation, clear blockages in the meridians, relieve pain, detoxify, strengthen the spleen and stomach, and balance yin and yang.
1. Tools
First, let's understand the tools used for gua sha. Many people may have heard that coins are commonly used, but it is not recommended as some individuals may have allergies to metals. Instead, it is recommended to use a professional gua sha board.
In terms of materials, according to traditional Chinese medicine, rhino horn or buffalo horn is the best, followed by jade or stone, and ceramic is also good. Smooth wooden gua sha boards can also be used for health purposes.
In terms of shape, a square shape is preferable, but the corners must be smooth and not sharp. This shape of gua sha board allows for easy grip and facilitates different techniques. For health purposes, the thickness of the gua sha board should be moderate and not too thin.
2. Gua Sha Oil
Dry gua sha should be avoided, as it can increase pain and make the skin rough due to excessive friction. Therefore, gua sha oil must be applied before gua sha. Olive oil can be chosen as gua sha oil, or you can choose a plant-based massage oil according to your preference.
3. Pressure and Technique
It is important to apply relatively strong pressure and perform quick strokes during gua sha. Adjust the direction of gua sha according to different acupoints. Generally, gua sha a specific acupoint 50-100 times until there is a slight redness under the skin and the surface temperature of the skin increases.
4. Aftercare
(1) After gua sha, wipe off any gua sha oil that has not been absorbed by the skin with a tissue.
(2) Avoid exposing the skin to cold water or cold temperatures after gua sha.
