If you're honest, you can't always say, "Just having a little fun" when someone asks you about your workout routine. Why is that? Why aren't all workouts very effective? What can you do to make sure your workouts are not only "awesome" but that they get you closer to the physique you desire? Here are seven things you can start doing now to make great, productive workouts a foregone conclusion every time you walk into the gym.

Eat well, stay hydrated and rest well.

Everything you've done since your last training session sets the tone for the next one. The foods you eat, they all affect how well you recover and perform next time. Not having enough food (or getting too much of the wrong food), and other stressors can make your workouts ineffective.

Set specific goals

Wandering around the gym without a specific goal is not a preamble to a successful workout. If you don't know why you're training, how can you train hard? Success requires more thought than just telling yourself to go to the gym and do some reps. Next time, before you go to the gym, sit in a quiet place and think carefully about the workout you want to do. Do you want to gain weight? Okay, cool! How much weight do you want and when? Maybe you're not happy with the size of your arms or legs. How big do you want them to be? If you want your 16-inch arms to be 20 seconds a day, set a short-term goal of gaining an inch in 12 weeks. The key is to have a very clear goal of what you are training for and when you want to reach that goal. Having a strong sense of purpose will drive you when you hit the weights or hit the wall. With a specific goal in mind, you can carry out your training with passion.

Have a competitor/training partner

It's not always easy to stay motivated and get 100% every workout. We all know how easy it is to slack off, cut corners, make excuses as to why we aren't as heavy as we should be, or why we stop the set when we have the last few movements left. Find a partner who can also act as a friendly competitor to get you in the game. Then when your partner is watching you, you are unlikely to stop 5-6 times.

Change up your workout gear

Give yourself some new tank tops, shorts, leggings, t-shirts and sneakers. This may sound ridiculous to some people, but after research, it has been concluded that what you wear affects your performance.

Train to the right music

Music is a powerful and effective way to set your mood. It can make you happy, sad, angry, or want to get up and dance. It can also make you want to train. Create your own playlist of songs and switch the switch in your brain to beast mode.

Enter fitness competitions

It's one thing to see pictures of great physiques on your phone or in magazines; it's a whole different feeling to see them in real life in person. No matter what stage of fitness you're in, you'll be excited to see so many men and women who have trained to get fit, and it can be motivating for you.
