How to determine if a muscle is strained What does a muscle strain feel like

April 28, 2023
Calf muscle strains are common, and are especially prevalent among athletes. Injuries often occur when playing sports, and the biggest problem after an injury is that it is hard to know if it is a muscle strain or something else, so it is important to determine correctly.

Determining the symptoms of muscle spasms

A sudden muscle contraction causes a muscle spasm and subsequent severe pain in the calf. Sudden, intense spasms in the lower leg are commonly referred to as "muscle cramps". Although muscle cramps are very painful, they usually go away on their own, or with simple treatment. Muscle cramps include the following symptoms. 1. stiffness and tightness of the calf muscles 2. Sudden, sharp pain in the muscle 3. A "swelling" or bulging of the muscle

Treatment of muscle cramps

Muscle cramps will disappear quickly. Stretching and hot and cold compresses can speed up the recovery. 1. Stretch the affected calf muscle. Put your whole body weight on the leg with the spasm and stretch the muscle. Bend the knee slightly. Or sit down and stretch the cramped leg forward. Use a towel to gently pull the foot toward you. 2. Apply heat. Use a heating pad, hot water bag or hot towel to relax the cramped calf muscle. Taking a hot bath can also help. 3. Cold compress. Massage the cramped calf with ice or an ice pack to help relieve the pain. You should not apply ice for more than 15-20 minutes at a time, and wrap the ice pack in a towel to prevent frostbite.

Determining the symptoms of tendonitis

Tendonitis is caused by inflammation of the tendon. Tendons are cord-like and thick and are responsible for attaching the muscle to the bone. Any tendon can become inflamed and usually occurs in the elbow, knee and heel. Tendonitis can cause pain in the calf or heel. Symptoms of tendonitis include. 1. a dull or aching pain that gets worse when you move the joint. 2. A "creaking" or rubbing sound when moving the joint 3. pressure or redness and swelling 4. Swelling or lumpiness

Treatment of tendonitis

Treatment for tendonitis is generally simple and includes rest, over-the-counter pain medication, ice, compression bandages and elevation of the affected area.

Determining the symptoms of a hallux valgus strain

A hallux valgus strain is not as serious as a strained or torn gastrocnemius muscle. It is most likely to occur in people who run every day or in long-distance runners. Typically, a hallux valgus strain includes the following symptoms. 1. Tightness or stiffness in the calf muscle 2. Pain that worsens over the course of a few days or even weeks 3. Pain that worsens after walking or jogging 4. slight swelling
