How to exercise when you have gout

April 4, 2023
With long-term exercise, gout patients can lose weight and return to their ideal body shape, and their blood uric acid will drop. In addition, through reasonable exercise, gout patients can not only enhance physical fitness and strengthen the body's defense ability, but also greatly benefit from reducing joint pain and preventing joint contracture and muscle atrophy.

Which exercises are suitable for gout patients

Choose aerobic exercise

Aerobic exercise is characterized by long duration, can enhance endurance, consume excess fat, and is not easily fatigued. Low-intensity, long-duration exercise is basically aerobic exercise, for example, walking, jogging, long-distance slow swimming, cycling, dancing, and tai chi.

Avoid anaerobic exercise

Anaerobic exercise is mainly high-intensity, high-volume sports for a short period of time, such as 100-meter and 200-meter sprints, 100-meter swimming, high jump, weight lifting, push-ups, fast sit-ups, bar and double-bar exercises, etc. During anaerobic exercise, blood uric acid and lactic acid levels will increase and inhibit the excretion of uric acid by the kidneys, further increasing the level of uric acid in the body. Therefore, gout patients should avoid anaerobic exercise as much as possible.

Do what you can

Exercise is not as much as it should be. Gout patients can estimate whether the intensity of their exercise is appropriate according to their pulse rate. Specifically, at the end of exercise, we count the pulse for 15 seconds, multiply the result by 4, and add 10 to get the pulse at the end of exercise (1 minute). The reason for adding 10 is that the pulse rate will start to drop as soon as the exercise is over, so adding 10 is a correction to accurately estimate the pulse state at the end of the exercise. Thus, by counting the pulse and referring to the table below, we can see if we have exercised sufficiently. By comparing this table, if the intensity of exercise is too high or too low, you may want to adjust the way and duration of exercise. If you feel uncomfortable during exercise, stop and count your pulse to see if the intensity of your exercise is too great.

Caution.

When gout strikes, stop exercising When gout strikes, even very mild arthritis should temporarily say goodbye to "sports career". At this time, if you do not pay attention to rest and exercise blindly, it will aggravate the adverse reactions of the acute phase of gout, thus aggravating the disease. When the gout attack has improved, you can choose low-intensity exercise to start exercising.
