Can milk be boiled?

May 10, 2023
There are many people who still retain the habit of boiling milk before drinking it, and others who heat it up in order to have hot milk. So can milk be boiled?

Can milk be boiled?

Milk can be boiled. If you boil the milk a little, it will kill the bacteria and will not cause any discomfort after consumption.

Can milk be boiled for a long time?

Milk should not be boiled for a long time. When heating and sterilizing milk, if it is cooked for too long, it will not only reduce the color, aroma and taste of the milk, but also cause a lot of damage to the nutrients in the milk.

What nutrients are lost when milk is boiled for a long time

When the temperature of milk reaches 60°C, the colloidal protein particles will change from soluble to gelatinous, and the calcium phosphate will change from acidic to neutral and precipitate. When the milk is heated to 100℃, the lactose in the milk will start to caramelize and gradually decompose into lactic acid and produce a small amount of formic acid.

How long to cook milk

Milk should be heated and sterilized by boiling for 1-3 minutes on a light flame. Keep stirring with a spoon during the heating process to prevent paste. You can use a stainless steel pot to heat milk.

Which milk does not need to be heated

Unopened boxes of room-temperature milk have been autoclaved and do not need to be reheated to sterilize when consumed. Low-temperature pasteurized fresh milk, which contains active substances that are beneficial to the human body, should not be heated either. Generally, only milk that has been left for a period of time after opening needs to be heated for sterilization.

Warm Tips

Boiled milk can be stored for up to 10-12 hours, but in the hot summer, food is prone to spoilage and the nutritional value of milk will be reduced if left for a long time, so it is advisable to consume it early.
