Exploring the Health Benefits of Tianma: Traditional Chinese Medicinal Herb for Consumption

Tianma, also known as Shencao and Limu, is a common traditional Chinese medicinal herb in China. It has sedative, analgesic, and anticonvulsant effects, can lower blood pressure, and has a protective effect on myocardial ischemia. The immune activity of Tianma polysaccharide is also well-known. With so many benefits, people have a growing fondness for Tianma. So how should Tianma be consumed?
 


 

1. Tianma stewed chicken

【Ingredients】1 whole chicken (about 1500g), 15g Tianma, 50g water-soaked frozen mushrooms, 500g chicken broth, seasonings as needed.

【Method】Wash and slice the Tianma, put it in a bowl, steam for 10 minutes and remove. Bone and cut the chicken into small pieces, blanch with oil and remove. Sauté the spring onion and ginger in oil, add chicken broth and seasonings, pour in the chicken pieces, simmer over low heat for 40 minutes, add Tianma slices, simmer for another 5 minutes, thicken the sauce, and drizzle with chicken oil.

【Usage】Can be eaten alone or with rice.

2. Tianma boiled eggs

【Ingredients】60g fresh Tianma, 3 eggs, 1000g water.

【Method】Cut the fresh Tianma into slices and boil in water for 30 minutes, then add the eggs and cook until done.

【Usage】Eat once every other day.

3. Tianma braised oxtail

【Ingredients】10g Tianma, 2 oxtails, mother chicken meat, pig elbow, dried scallops, seasonings as needed.

【Method】Wash the Tianma and put it into a jar, steam until cooked, and cut into slices. Cook the soup with mother chicken and pig elbow. Cut the oxtail at the joints and put it into a pot. Add water, spring onion, ginger, and white wine to remove the odor. Then add the oxtail to the cooked mother chicken and pig elbow soup, and add ham, dried scallops, and seasonings to the soup. Simmer over low heat for 2 hours. Remove the oxtail, mother chicken, and pig elbow, arrange them neatly on a plate, and then garnish the plate with Tianma slices. Thicken with starch, drizzle with sesame oil, and it's ready to serve.

【Usage】Eat meat and drink soup 1-2 times a day.

4. Tianma stewed soft-shelled turtle

【Ingredients】1 soft-shelled turtle (about 450g), 15g Tianma slices, seasonings as needed.

【Method】Blanch the soft-shelled turtle with boiling water, scrape off the surface mud, and remove the yellow butter from the body. Apply turtle bile on the back of the turtle shell, place it in a container with the belly facing up, cover it with Tianma slices, spring onion, ginger, and a suitable amount of yellow wine. Cover the container and simmer in water for 1.5-2 hours.

【Usage】When eating, according to personal preference, dip the newly stewed Tianma and soft-shelled turtle in sesame oil or garlic sauce and drink the soup.
 


 

5. Tianma duck

【Ingredients】100g fresh Tianma, 30g fresh ginger, 1 water duck

【Method】Slaughter and remove the feathers and internal organs of the duck, stew it with sliced Tianma and fresh ginger until the duck is cooked, and season with salt and monosodium glutamate.

【Usage】Eat meat and drink soup.

6. Tianma pork slice soup

【Ingredients】Tianma and pork, as needed.

【Method】Soak the Tianma until soft and slice it. Cook the pork slices in soup with 3-6g of Tianma.

【Usage】Eat the medicine, meat, and soup together, suitable for regular consumption.

7. Tianma pig brain porridge

【Ingredients】10g Tianma, 1 pig brain, 250g glutinous rice.

【Method】Wash the pig brain and put it in a clay pot with Tianma, then add glutinous rice and cook the porridge with water until both the porridge and the brain are cooked.

【Usage】Take warm porridge once daily in the morning.

8. Tianma bamboo juice porridge

【Ingredients】10g Tianma, 100g glutinous rice, 30g bamboo juice, white sugar as needed.

【Method】Soak the Tianma until soft, slice it thinly, cook the porridge with glutinous rice and water, and add bamboo juice and white sugar.

【Usage】Divide the porridge and Tianma slices into two servings within a day.

【Applicable Range】Suitable for the treatment of epilepsy caused by liver wind and phlegm heat (before the onset, dizziness, headache, chest tightness, fatigue, irritability; during the onset, sudden fainting, unclear consciousness, convulsions, drooling, gradual recovery after moving, and normal after waking up).
