Precautions for Taking Niuxi in Chinese Medicine: A Brief Guide

Chinese medicine Niuxi, the root of the amaranth family plant Niuteng. Also known as Niuke Xi. It is distributed throughout the country, and there are many cultivated varieties in some areas. The root of Niuxi is harvested when the stems and leaves wither in winter, and the root hairs and soil are removed. After drying and wrinkling, it is fumigated with sulfur several times, and then the top is cut off and dried. What are the precautions for taking Niuxi?


 

[Preparation of Niuxi]

Niuxi: Remove impurities, wash, moisten and soften, remove the reed, cut into sections, and dry. Wine-soaked Niuxi: Take Niuxi sections, sprinkle with rice wine, mix well, let it moisten, then stir-fry in a pot until slightly dry, take it out and let it cool. (For every 100 catties of Niuxi sections, use 10 catties of rice wine)

① "Leigong Pao Zhi Lun": "When using Niuxi, remove the head and dust, soak it in the natural juice of Huangjing for one night, strain it, finely cut it, and bake it until dry."

② "Gangmu": "Nowadays, Niuxi is only soaked in wine. If you want it to go down, use it raw; if you want to nourish it, use it baked; or use it steamed after mixing it with wine."

[Properties and Flavors of Niuxi]

Sweet, bitter, sour, neutral.

① "Benjing": "Taste bitter and sour."

② "Bielu": "Sour, neutral, non-toxic."

③ "Bencao Zheng": "Taste bitter and sweet, slightly cool in nature."

[Meridians of Niuxi]

Enters the liver and kidney meridians.

① "Gangmu": "Foot Jueyin, Foot Shaoyin."

② "Bencao Huiyan": "Enters the three yin meridians of the foot."

[Precautions for Niuxi]

It is not suitable for those with sinking qi, spleen deficiency and diarrhea, weak lower body, nocturnal emission, excessive menstruation, and pregnant women.

① "Bencao Jingji Zhu": "Avoid using with fireflies, turtle shells, and Lu Ying. Avoid using with Baiqian."

② "Pinhui Jingyao": "Pregnant women should not take it."

③ "Bencao Jing Shu": "If there is suspicion of pregnancy before a long period of amenorrhea, do not use it; do not use it in upper digestive tract diseases; avoid it for continuous uterine bleeding."

④ "Bencao Tongxuan": "It should be avoided in cases of nocturnal emission and loss of essence."

⑤ "Bencao Zheng": "If there is cold in the organs, slippery stools, and weak lower body, it should be avoided."

⑥ "Yaopin Huayi": "If there is diarrhea, spleen deficiency, and leg and knee pain, it is not suitable for use."

⑦ "Depai Bencao": "If there is insufficient qi and frequent urination, it is forbidden to use it."
