Alleviating Stomach Bloating: The Power of Porridge for Digestion in Middle and Old Age

January 10, 2024

As people enter middle and old age, their digestive function gradually declines along with their overall physical health. This can lead to symptoms such as stomach bloating and constipation. While many elderly individuals may choose to eat fruits like bananas to aid digestion, what many people do not know is that drinking porridge can also alleviate stomach bloating.

1. Sand ginger porridge

Recipe: First, cook 100g of glutinous rice to make porridge. After 10 minutes, add 5g of ground sand ginger to the porridge. Cook the porridge until it is ready to be consumed. Drink it twice a day.

Effect: This porridge warms the spleen and stomach, relieves bloating, and helps with heat dissipation and nausea. It is suitable for individuals experiencing stomach pain, bloating, and vomiting.

2. Dried tangerine peel and pork porridge

Recipe: Cook white rice. In a pot, add a little cooking oil, lean pork, and scallions. Stir-fry them. Add an appropriate amount of water and bring it to a boil. Then add dried tangerine peel and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the cooked rice, shredded lean pork, preserved eggs, and scallions to the pot and cook them into porridge. When it is ready, add salt to taste.

Effect: Dried tangerine peel promotes the secretion of digestive juices and helps eliminate intestinal gas. It is suitable for individuals experiencing bloating, poor appetite, diarrhea, and cough with excessive phlegm.

3. Buddha's hand porridge

Recipe: Take 20g of Buddha's hand and decoct it to remove impurities. Take 100g of glutinous rice and cook it with an appropriate amount of water to make porridge. After the porridge is cooked, add rock sugar and the decocted Buddha's hand. Cook it briefly. Consume it twice a day.

Effect: This porridge has a refreshing and appetizing effect and helps relieve gas and pain. It is suitable for elderly individuals with weak stomachs, indigestion, belching, and stomach pain.

4. Radish seed porridge

Recipe: Clean and stir-fry radish seeds. Set them aside. Clean glutinous rice. Boil the radish seeds to make a decoction, then add an appropriate amount of glutinous rice. Cook it over low heat until it becomes a thin porridge. Consume it once a day for 3 consecutive days.

Effect: This porridge mainly targets the elderly with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cough with excessive phlegm, chest tightness, asthma, poor appetite, belching, and bloating.

Friendly reminder: People who are weak or have poor digestion should avoid or consume less soybeans, black beans, mung beans, and other legumes, as they are difficult to digest and can cause gas and bloating.
