Postpartum Weight Loss: Avoiding Pitfalls for a Healthy Recovery

April 12, 2024

In this era where thin is considered beautiful, being slim has become the aesthetic standard for people. Therefore, women pay special attention to their figure, especially after giving birth. Postpartum weight loss has become an important task for women to maintain their figure. However, postpartum women's physical condition is not as good as before, and weight loss should be done with caution to avoid falling into postpartum weight loss pitfalls.

1. Exercising immediately after giving birth

Exercising shortly after giving birth may slow down the recovery of the uterus and cause bleeding. Intense exercise can also slow down the healing of surgical incisions or episiotomy, and some joints are particularly prone to injury. The situation is even more dangerous for mothers who have had a C-section. Mothers who have had a vaginal birth can start postpartum exercises after 4-6 weeks, while mothers who have had a C-section need 6-8 weeks.

2. Losing weight while anemic

If there is excessive blood loss during childbirth, it can cause anemia and slow down the postpartum recovery. Trying to lose weight without addressing anemia will only worsen the condition. Foods rich in iron include spinach, red beans, fish, meat, and animal liver.

3. Losing weight while constipated

Postpartum water retention and gastrointestinal dysfunction can easily lead to constipation, which is not conducive to weight loss. It is important to drink plenty of water and eat fiber-rich vegetables consciously. When constipation is severe, drinking yogurt and milk can be helpful.

4. Losing weight during breastfeeding

Dieting during breastfeeding may affect the quality of breast milk. To lose weight while breastfeeding, it is important to breastfeed properly because breastfeeding will not make you gain a lot of weight. If you are breastfeeding, you can start exercising for weight loss after 6 months. If you are not breastfeeding, you can start working on weight loss after 3 months based on your own health condition.
