Symptoms of cold in pregnant women

Common cold is a common disease caused by various viruses. It usually has a sudden onset with an incubation period of 1-3 days, which varies with different viruses. Intestinal viruses have a shorter incubation period, while adenoviruses, respiratory syncytial viruses, and others have a longer incubation period.

The symptoms of a common cold in pregnant women mainly include sneezing, nasal congestion, clear nasal discharge, and can also manifest as cough, dry throat, itching or burning sensation, and even postnasal drip.

After 2-3 days, the nasal discharge becomes thicker, often accompanied by sore throat, tearing, decreased taste, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, and poor appetite.

A common cold generally does not cause fever or systemic symptoms, only mild fever, discomfort, mild chills, and headache.

During physical examination, congestion and edema of the nasal mucosa, and secretions in the throat can be observed. Generally, it can recover within 5-7 days.

Can pregnant women take medicine for colds?

The use of cold medicine is strictly prohibited in the first three months of pregnancy because this is the most critical stage of embryo development.

If a pregnant woman has the flu in the early stages of pregnancy, a doctor may even recommend terminating the pregnancy to prevent the virus from affecting the fetus. Medications should be used with caution during the middle stage of pregnancy, and drugs that may damage the auditory nerve, such as quinine, streptomycin, and kanamycin, should be avoided.

In the late stage of pregnancy, the influence of drugs on pregnant women and fetuses is relatively reduced.

Taking medicine for a cold while pregnant may affect the safety of the fetus, so it must be treated with caution. It is best to use medication under the guidance of a doctor.
